Job summary

British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) seeks a Compliance co-op student/intern for Winter 2027 (Jan–Apr) or Winter 2027 & Summer 2027 (Jan–Aug). You will support our compliance team in maintaining regulatory adherence and prudent risk management while gaining exposure to a large Canadian institutional investor.

You will work with a seasoned team in Legal Affairs, performing monitoring tasks, documentation, and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to high ethical standards and risk management.
  • Basic knowledge of business and investments.
  • Interest in investment management and compliance functions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg is a plus.
  • Experience with AI tools is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Compliance personnel on various projects under supervision.
  • Conduct regular investment pooled fund monitoring tasks.
  • Perform personal trading reconciliations and conflict of interest screening.
  • Assist in documenting current and new compliance monitoring procedures.
  • Support research, ad-hoc projects and task completion as assigned.
  • Help improve Compliance program using technology solutions (e.g., dashboards).

The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Compliance co-op student/intern for the Winter 2027 (January - April) or Winter 2027 & Summer 2027 (January to August) to provide support for our dynamic compliance team in maintaining the highest standards of regulatory adherence and risk management.

We provide objective and independent risk management and compliance services that protect our client’s assets, safeguard BCI’s reputation, and facilitate the achievement of BCI’s strategic objectives.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
  • The Compliance team consists of a Chief Compliance & Ethics Officer, 2 Directors, Senior Manager, Manager, 2 Senior Associates, 2 Associate, 3 Senior Analysts, and Data Management Technician. Together we support and manage the Compliance program at BCI. You will also get the opportunity to work with other groups, as required, within the organization such as the Capital Market, Private Market, Technology, and Legal teams.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
  • Work under the supervision of different Compliance personnel to assist with various projects
  • Conduct regular investment pooled fund monitoring tasks
  • Conduct personal trading reconciliations and conflict of interest screening
  • Assist with documenting current and new compliance monitoring procedures
  • Research, ad-hoc projects and complete tasks as assigned by the team
  • Assist in the continuous improvement of the Compliance program using existing technology solutions and provide further enhancements as appropriate (i.e. dashboards)
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • A dedication to hard work, commitment to the highest ethical standards, and an eagerness to learn
  • A basic knowledge of business and investments
  • Has an interest in investment management
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy, excellent product quality, and attention to detail
  • Strong research skills combined with analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to use Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg would be an asset
  • Has experience using AI tools such as Co-Pilot, ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI models

  • Competitive pay: $2,330.00 gross bi-weekly or $2,155.00 gross bi-weekly + vacation leave paid based on 6% of salary ($2,330.00 gross biweekly for those with (or working towards) a graduate degree and $2,155.00 gross biweekly for those with (or working towards) an undergraduate degree, diploma, or certificate)
  • Travel: if coming to Victoria for this work term, BCI will provide a fixed-rate travel allowance based on your location

  • Spend your off hours exploring beautiful Victoria and Vancouver Island
  • All co-ops/internships will need to be completed in person at our Victoria office with the option to work one day per week from home. Please note, some positions are not eligible for hybrid work.
