Job description

Primary Duties

  • Implement accommodations and modifications as outlined in the student’s Individualized Support Plan (ISP).
  • Support the student with social-emotional regulation using strategies provided by the learning support team.
  • Foster positive peer relationships and support the development of communication and language skills, including the use of AAC as required.
  • Provide assistance with communication, mobility, and personal care needs (including toileting and feeding) as necessary, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other school staff to help create and maintain inclusive learning environments that promote active participation.
  • Encourage and facilitate the student’s engagement in classroom and school-wide activities, ensuring meaningful involvement alongside peers.

Technical Skills Required

  • Experience or training in supporting individuals with complex needs, including toileting, feeding, equipment management, and AAC.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn, how to support the use of AAC systems and adapt instructional materials.
  • A strong commitment to inclusive education principles, ensuring the student is meaningfully included in the life of the classroom and school community.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and respect for the dignity and unique needs of students with complex disabilities.
  • Physical ability to provide lifting and transferring support safely, using appropriate equipment (training will be provided).
  • Training in Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments (SIVA) is an asset; training will be provided if needed.
  • A current Criminal Records Check and Alberta Children’s Services Intervention Record Check (or willingness to obtain).
  • Child and Youth Care Diploma, Educational Assistant Certificate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
