Indigenous Student Advisor - Southern Region

Location: Southern Region

Start date: March 17, 2025

Vacancy Details: 1.0 (permanent position with an end date of June 26, 2025)

The Southern Region Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) will assist with leading and implementing programs, services, and other supports to meet the unique needs of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit students, and their families, with a focus on successful student learning from Kindergarten to grade 12. The Southern Region Indigenous Student Advisor will report directly to the Indigenous Lead Administrator for District School Board Ontario North East.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  1. Establishing trusting relationships with students, families, staff, and communities.
  2. Identifying and working to remove barriers to student success.
  3. Providing guidance and support to identify pathways based on individualized strengths and interests.
  4. Ensuring ongoing open dialogue with families.
  5. Providing access to resources that foster a sense of belonging.
  6. Facilitating access to community supports, course planning, and mentorship for students.
  7. Creating and enhancing a welcoming supportive space for students in various schools with various school staff.
  8. Building close supportive relationships with students, families, and communities.
  9. Acting as an advocate for students who identify as Indigenous.
  10. Facilitating strong communication between the schools, families, and First Nation communities.
  11. Assisting with developing and/or enhancing cultural activities in the schools.
  12. Building and maintaining community partnerships with agencies supporting cultural awareness within our schools (e.g., Keepers of the Circle, Mino M’shki-ki, Community Elders and Knowledge Keepers).

Qualifications:

  1. Ontario Secondary School Diploma and/or experience.
  2. Post-secondary education is an asset (e.g., Educational Assistant, Social Work).
  3. Valid driver’s license is required.
  4. Demonstrated experience/knowledge of cultural teachings and best practices is required.

Salary as per the current OSSTF - PSSP Collective Agreement. Collective Agreements (dsb1.ca)
