Job summary

Bonaventure Support Services in Nanaimo seeks a Community Support Worker fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) to help individuals in their homes and community with daily living tasks and social participation.

You will communicate via ASL, embrace Deaf culture, and apply trauma-informed, positive behavioural approaches to support wellbeing and safety. The role offers flexible shifts, including live-in and shift-based opportunities, with strong benefits and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting individuals with diverse abilities and relevant training (CSW, RCA, SIVA or equivalent).
• Provide person-centred support with daily living activities while promoting choice, voice, self-determination, and community participation.
• Communicate effectively in ASL, recognize behaviour as communication, and apply trauma-informed approaches to support wellbeing.
• Demonstrate respect for Deaf culture and identity, with a commitment to ongoing ASL learning and professional development.
• Work collaboratively with families, community partners, and the Bonaventure team.

Position Type: Flexible Shifts (Live-in 24hrs & Shift-based) Full and part time available.

Wage: $28,000- $58,000 annually

The Role

What You Bring

• Education and or experience supporting individuals with diverse abilities, including relevant training such as CSW, RCA, SIVA, or equivalent experience.
• Provide person-centred support with daily living activities while promoting choice, voice, self-determination, and community participation in alignment with Person-Centred Plans.
• Communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL), recognize behaviour as communication, and apply trauma-informed and positive behavioural approaches to support wellbeing and safety.
• Demonstrate respect for Deaf culture and identity, with a commitment to ongoing ASL learning and professional development.
• Work collaboratively with families, community partners, and the Bonaventure team while upholding organizational values, policies, human rights, and health and safety standards.

Requirements

• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License
• RCMP Criminal Record Check (Schedule A)
• MCFD Hub Screening
• First Aid with CPR Certificate, Food Safe Level 1
• Immunization Record
• Physician’s Declaration & TB Screen
• Three professional references (including one recent employer)
• ASL certification (or willingness to achieve one)
