Job summary

Bonaventure Support Services is seeking a Community Housing Support Worker in Nanaimo on a part-time, live-in basis. The role focuses on helping adults with diverse abilities live dignified, independent lives within home and community settings.

You will work under the guidance of the Program Manager, collaborating with families and community partners to provide holistic care, ensure safety, and foster meaningful relationships. A supportive team environment and ongoing training are offered.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Social Services or Community Support Work or equivalent experience.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
• Experience supporting individuals with diverse abilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support adults with daily living activities including health, nutrition, recreation, personal care, and community participation.
• Assist with developing life skills that promote dignity, independence, and quality of life.
• Apply positive behavioral strategies and crisis intervention techniques, recognizing behavior as communication.
• Collaborate with families, community partners (MCFD, CLBC, VIHA, Behavior Consultants, etc.), and the team to provide holistic care.
• Ensure health, safety, and wellbeing are maintained.
• Build strong, respectful relationships with the people you support, their families, and colleagues.

Schedule: Thursday (8 am - 8 am)

Wage: $536.29 – $569.94 per diem

The Role

What You Bring

We’re seeking individuals who combine skill with compassion. To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

• Diploma or Degree in Social Services, Community Support Work, or equivalent experience
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
• Experience supporting individuals with diverse abilities (preferred)
• Ability to work independently and remain calm in high-stress situations
• Personal suitability to foster dignity, independence, and individuality

Requirements

• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License, and personal vehicle.
• RCMP Criminal Record Check & MCFD Hub Screening (employer facilitated).
• First Aid with CPR, Food Safe Level 1.
• 3 reference letters (including one from your most recent employer).
• Immunization record, TB Screen, and Physician’s Declaration.
