Job summary

The City of Edmonton is seeking a Diverse Communities Coordinator for the Edmonton Police Service’s Crime and Trauma-Informed Support Services Unit. This permanent, full-time position focuses on providing culturally relevant support to diverse communities affected by crime and trauma. The successful candidate will engage with various stakeholders, conduct needs assessments, and contribute to policy development while ensuring high-quality service delivery. Ideal candidates will possess a degree in Social Sciences and relevant experience in social services.

Job description

This posting is for one (1) Permanent, Full-Time position that may continue until March 31, 2027

The Edmonton Police Service’s Crime and Trauma-Informed Support Services (CTSS) Unit is hiring a dedicated and equity-driven professional to serve as the Diverse Communities Coordinator. This role focuses on ensuring that victim supports are culturally relevant, accessible, and responsive to the unique needs of racialized, newcomer, faith-based, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+, and other equity-deserving communities affected by crime and trauma. Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Provide culturally competent, trauma-informed support to victims of crime and trauma.
  • Conduct client centered needs assessments, case conferences and ongoing support from referral through to file resolution in court..
  • Collaborate with Volunteer Advocates and EPS members to enhance inclusive service delivery.
  • Identify systemic barriers to services and co-develop solutions with community stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with other EPS Units along with other CTSS Coordinators to ensure the community receives a high level of service.
  • Build and strengthen relationships to foster trust and enhance community awareness of victim supports and resources available at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.
  • Contribute to inclusive policy development, community outreach strategies, and internal equity efforts.
  • Prepare statistical reports, drafts/update policy, report on program outputs and other related duties as required.
  • Develop and maintain strong stakeholder partnerships and identify appropriate community resources relevant to the client’s served.
  • Serve as a liaison between CTSS, The Community Relations unit, equity-focused community groups, and other Law Enforcement Agencies.

Portfolios may be adjusted at the discretion of unit leadership, in alignment with evolving organizational and community needs, and based on operational requirements.

Qualifications

  • University graduation in Social Sciences from a recognized university or a two (2) year diploma from a community college or technical institute in social services. Employees with a degree (BSW, MSW) or diploma in Social Work must be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
  • Minimum two (2) years’ related work experience in social services or community outreach with diverse populations.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Criminal Justice System, how it relates to victim services and a demonstrated understanding of the “victim experience” and the Victims Bill of Rights.
  • Ability to work independently with the ability to adapt quickly to change.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed principles and how to apply them.
  • Experience providing client support immediately following a traumatic event and working in environments providing front-line support.
  • Experience in partnerships working with organizations who support a diverse population of people who have experienced trauma.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the various stages of grief and types of loss, as well as experience supporting clients impacted by intergenerational trauma, systemic discrimination, or social exclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice cultural humility with a working knowledge of anti-racism, anti-oppressive principles, and equity-based community development practices.
  • Ability to work closely alongside investigators, maintain high levels of confidentiality concerning the release of sensitive investigative material and grasp of the appropriate levels of information release.
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, problem solving and conflict resolution skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement while building effective relationships within the communities served.
  • GBA+ certification and intersectional understanding of gender-based violence.
  • Working knowledge of addiction and mental health would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and Curriculum Design of Adult Learning Principles and Theories would be considered an asset.
  • A Certificate of Advocate Training from the Solicitor General and coordinator training would be considered an asset.
  • Completion of training in Trauma-Informed practice, non-violent crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and conflict resolution is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages or demonstrated experience using interpretation services, and lived experience or deep connection with one or more equity-deserving communities would be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta’s Driver’s license. Must complete a City Driver’s License application. OR Must also have access to own vehicle and provide written proof of current public liability and property damage insurance to a minimum of $1,000,000. EPS will reimburse mileage for any private vehicle usage during assigned duties. Client transport is not required.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Monday to Friday. After-hours callout on a rotational schedule. (Weekend shifts may be required)

Salary Range: 21B, Salary Grade: 017, $32.42 - $40.72 (Hourly), $2,593.90 - $3,258.20 (Bi-Weekly), $67,701.31 - $85,037.98 (Annually).
The rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
