Job summary

YMCA of Niagara is seeking a Community Programs Team Member for the Beyond the Bell after-school program in St. Catharines. This part-time role focuses on delivering wellness activities, literacy and numeracy support, and positive engagement with youth in local elementary schools.

You will work 3:00–5:45pm, Monday to Thursday, with 6 to 12 hours weekly. Candidates should be prepared to participate in training and adhere to the YMCA Child Protection Policies.

Qualifications

  • Current Intermediate / Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification.
  • Enrolment in or completion of a university degree or college diploma in Education, Recreation, Physical Education, Child and Youth Studies, or a related field an asset.
  • Knowledge of child development and related “new” research an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead personal wellness programs for children and youth after school at local elementary schools in the Niagara Region, focusing on literacy and numeracy.
  • Provides program delivery at the Beyond the Bell site.
  • Demonstrate positive interactions with youth, parents and community partners involved with the program in order to build relationships.
  • Possibility of 6 to 12 hours a week available.
  • Be available to work a regular schedule from 3:00-5:45pm while also maintaining flexibility to manage issues, concerns and problems as they may arise.
  • Act as a liaison between the YMCA and the host school, demonstrating excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Participate in training and adhere to the YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures as established by the YMCA of Niagara.

NATURE & SCOPE

YMCA Beyond the Bell is an academic‑based after school program that keeps the well‑being of every child in mind. It combines recreation, academic assistance, nutritional snacks, and socialization activities all aimed at building confidence, developing social skills, promoting physical activity and enhancing academic achievement. Working with the Beyond the Bell Team Leader, Team Members will have the opportunity to help develop the curriculum and will be responsible for direct delivery at a program location.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and lead personal wellness programs for children and youth after school at local elementary schools in the Niagara Region, focusing on literacy and numeracy.
  • Provides program delivery at the Beyond the Bell site.
  • Demonstrate positive interactions with youth, parents and community partners involved with the program in order to build relationships.
  • Possibility of 6 to 12 hours a week available.
  • Be available to work a regular schedule from 3:00-5:45pm while also maintain flexibility to manage issues, concerns and problems as they may arise.
  • Assess conflict situations and exercise good judgment when implementing solutions.
  • Act as a liaison between the YMCA and the host school, demonstrating excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Participate in training and adhere to the YMCA Child Protection Policies and Procedures as established by the YMCA of Niagara.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The YMCA is looking for applicants who want to be a role model of healthy lifestyles and physical activity for youth and make a difference within their community.
  • Experience delivering youth recreational and leadership programs is an asset.
  • Enrolment in or completion of a university degree or college diploma in Education, Recreation, Physical Education, Child and Youth Studies, or a related field an asset.
  • Knowledge of child development and related “new” research an asset.
  • Current Intermediate / Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification.
  • Team members must be willing and able to participate in active games on a regular basis.
  • Reliable transportation to programs throughout St. Catharines is preferred.
  • Upon hiring, a clear and satisfactory criminal reference check inclusive of the vulnerable sector search (PVSC) issued for the YMCA of Niagara.
