Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Project Lead, CYF Manager, and/or designate, and working in the community setting, the Community Nutritionist uses a population health approach to assess, promote, protect, and enhance health, as well as prevent nutrition-related diseases throughout Vancouver Island. The primary focus of this PH Nutritionist will include food security and the promotion of healthy choices and pro-dietary guidance in school and community settings to reduce chronic disease and obesity across the lifespan in relation to the health promotion platform.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training, and Experience

Bachelor's Degree required in Food Sciences and/or Nutrition. Registered Dietitian designation required with current practicing registration. Two years of recent relevant experience with a focus on community development work, social marketing, project management, and interdisciplinary partnering. A valid BC Driver’s License.

Skills & Knowledge

Demonstrates understanding of food systems and sustainable food practices as they relate to and influence public health policies and programs.

Shows knowledge of how a public health perspective drives ethical decision-making in food and nutrition-related policies, programs, purchasing, partnerships, funding, and sponsorship.

Understands the development of food and nutrition public policy in Canada.

Demonstrates understanding of food and nutrition surveillance and monitoring as they relate to planning, policy analysis, program evaluation, advocacy, and research.

Knows the processes and roles of partnership, collaboration, community development, and advocacy to improve population health through food and nutrition strategies.

Shares understanding of core attitudes and values held by public health professionals.

Can communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Possesses public speaking, facilitation, and advocacy skills.

Understands social determinants of health and their impact on health outcomes.

Ability to work independently with initiative, maintaining collaborative relationships with community stakeholders.

Works well within a multidisciplinary team and understands community capacity building.

Promotes and models positive change leadership.

Committed to ongoing professional development as required by the employer.

Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.

Proficient in operating a personal computer with various Windows-based software.

Travel is required; transportation arrangements must meet operational needs.
