Job summary

The Community Navigator at Taggart Family YMCA serves as the first point of contact for members of the public, connecting them with services at Taggart, other YMCA locations, and within the NCR. You will respond to inquiries by phone, email, and in person, building knowledge of programs and local community resources.

You will gather promotional materials, coordinate lobby events, manage displays, and document interactions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year’s experience in customer service, sales, public relations, or a related field.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office, especially MS Word, Outlook, Calendar, and Forms.
  • First Aid & CPR; suicide prevention; and conflict de-escalation training preferred (will train).

Responsibilities

  • Responding to inquiries by phone, email and in person (at the Information Kiosk) by members of the general public and responding and referring appropriately.
  • Developing a fine-grained knowledge of YMCA program offerings at Taggart and other locations, as well as contact information for “warm handovers” to the right person at the right time.
  • Developing a robust knowledge of local (Centretown) and regional (Ottawa and Gatineau) community service providers (community health, social services, food banks, harm reduction, public library, women’s shelters, etc.), drawing on 2-1-1 (Community Navigation of Eastern Ontario) and 3-1-1 (City of Ottawa service line) as needed.
  • Gathering promotional materials from departments to display and share with members of the public.
  • Planning and coordinating informal social events to animate the lobby space for residents, community members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Curating and arranging YMCA product displays and business cards/brochures for small businesses/social enterprises.
  • Monitoring public washrooms in the lobby for safety and hygiene, logging cleaning requests as needed.
  • Liaising with Security staff for incidents requiring a security response.
  • Recording incidents as instructed.
  • Documenting phone and in-person interactions as instructed.
  • Reviewing and filling out logbooks at shift change as necessary.

What do you offer?

The Community Navigator (CN) is the first point of contact for members of the public accessing the YMCA. The CN will assist the public in being connected to the services they are seeking at the Taggart Family YMCA, other YMCA locations, in the local community, and across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Responding to inquiries by phone, email and in person (at the Information Kiosk) by members of the general public and responding and referring appropriately.
  • Developing a fine-grained knowledge of YMCA program offerings at Taggart and other locations, as well as contact information for “warm handovers” to the right person at the right time.
  • Developing a robust knowledge of local (Centretown) and regional (Ottawa and Gatineau) community service providers (community health, social services, food banks, harm reduction, public library, women’s shelters, etc.), drawing on 2-1-1 (Community Navigation of Eastern Ontario) and 3-1-1 (City of Ottawa service line) as needed.
  • Developing template responses for written inquiries that arrive frequently.
  • Gathering promotional materials from departments (e.g., gym schedules, event posters, program brochures, volunteer opportunities) to display and share with members of the public.
  • Planning and coordinating informal social events (e.g., coffee and snacks, board games, etc.), as directed, to animate the lobby space for residents, community members, staff, and volunteers.
  • Curating and arranging YMCA product displays (e.g., mugs and tshirts for purchase) and business cards/brochures for small businesses/social enterprises operated by YMCA residents and other local community members.
  • Monitoring public washrooms in the lobby for safety and hygiene, logging cleaning requests as needed.
  • Liaising with Security staff for any incidents requiring a security response.
  • Recording incidents as instructed.
  • Documenting phone and in-person interactions as instructed.
  • Reviewing and filling out logbooks at shift change as necessary.

What qualifications and abilities are we looking for?

The successful candidate will have the following:

Education

  • Secondary school diploma preferred.

Language

  • Fluent in English and French, oral and written
  • Other languages are an asset

Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum of one year’s experience in customer service, sales, public relations, or a related field.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • A Police Record check, not more than 6 months old is required.Police Records checks are reviewed on an individual basis and the offense(s) - if any - is considered in the decision‑making process in relation to the requirement of working with children, therefore not eliminating all candidates with a record from being offered a position.
  • Semi-annually, staff must complete the mandatory training for the protection of Children & Youth and submit the certificate of completion.
