Qualifications

Job description

Position Summary
We are currently hiring casual Community Mental Health Workers 1 to join our Mental Health (MH) team at the Penticton Health Centre.

What will you work on?
The Community Mental Health Worker provides services within a psychosocial rehabilitation and harm reduction framework for the assigned client population(s) with severe mental illnesses and/or substance use disorders.

This position works with the assigned client population(s) in developing, maintaining, or restoring daily living skills, and participates in activities to support skill development such as training, modeling and support in the following areas:
  1. Financial management and budgeting
  2. Interpersonal communication and relationships
  3. Providing medication reminders
  4. Overall wellness self-management
  5. Personal care (e.g., hygiene)
  6. Making and keeping appointments and other aspects of personal organization
  7. Household management (e.g., laundry, cleaning)
  8. Menu planning, grocery shopping, meal preparation
  9. Community access (e.g., public transportation and general community services)
  10. Vocational planning

Scheduling Information:
Shifts types are days and shift times are from 08:30 to 16:30 hours. This is a Casual opportunity. Casual means there are no guaranteed hours and work requirements can vary from 0 - 37.5 hours per week. Many careers with us begin with casual employment and lead to permanent or temporary career opportunities.

Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
  1. Grade 12
  2. Certificate in a field relevant to the position (such as, Community Mental Health Certificate, Human Service Worker Certificate, Social Services Worker Certificate, etc.)
  3. One year recent related experience working with the assigned client population(s) experiencing mental health and/or substance use problems; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  4. Food Safe certificate required
  5. Current valid B.C. Driver’s License

  1. Working knowledge of mental health issues and treatment in the assigned client population(s)
  2. Working knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness in the assigned client population(s)
  3. Working knowledge of community, social and health resources
  4. Ability to demonstrate and assist client with development of health life skills
  5. Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, and use non-violent crisis intervention techniques
  6. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  7. Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients
  8. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
  9. Ability to work with a culturally diverse population
  10. Ability to instruct
  11. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
  12. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  13. Ability to analyze and resolve problems
  14. Conflict resolution skills
  15. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  16. Ability to operate related equipment including proficiency in relevant computer applications
