Job Title: Community Housing Health Care Assistant

Position Type: Hourly

Wage: $24.41 to $27.89

Job Summary

Bonaventure Support Services in collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) are expanding on our existing limited mobility group home in the Parksville area. To meet the needs of community and family, Bonaventure is seeking to hire a full complementary team experienced in lifts, transfers, providing personal care and operating an adapted wheelchair accessible van. The Community Housing Health Care Assistant (HCA) will follow the direction of the Program Manager, and function as part of a team to provide for the daily living needs of individuals both in their home and in the community. Duties will be performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and in a manner which respects uniqueness, dignity, worth, need for self-respect and self-determination of the supported individuals, all in ways which promote maximum personal and functional independence.

The HCA will also be responsible for enhancing one's quality of life, ensuring the physical, emotional, social, recreational, economic, educational, and/or medical needs of supported individuals are met. A key component of this role may be crisis intervention and risk management, recognizing behavior as communication and promoting positive behavioral intervention strategies, following program approaches in a consistent, safe, and competent manner.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to relevant legislation and regulations (Motor Vehicle Act, CLBC, MCFD, CARF, WorkSafe-BC, Employment Standards).
  • Collaborate with MCFD, CLBC, VIHA, DDMHT, Health Services, Behavior Consultants, etc., and the Bonaventure Leadership team.
  • Uphold the Policies and Procedures of Bonaventure Support Services and model the Vision/Mission Statement, Values, and Code of Ethics.
  • Handle money appropriately and follow guidelines and procedures for handling petty cash.
  • Apply crisis intervention and risk management strategies.
  • Provide mentoring and support.
  • Recognize behavior as communication and promote positive behavioral intervention strategies consistently and safely.
  • Assist individuals with the activities of daily living involving their personal and health care, behavioural, nutritional, recreational, social, vocational, educational, and environmental needs as identified in their person-centered plans (PCP).
  • Safely administer, monitor, and maintain accurate records of medications, following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate tolerance, respect, and promote dignity and rights of supported individuals.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and homelike environment for both supported individuals and the support team, promptly reporting any unsafe or faulty equipment to ensure a hazard-free setting.
  • Foster a friendly and effective working relationship with family and team members.

Qualifications

  • Preferred formal education (Diploma or Degree, CSW, RCA, SIVA etc.) and/or work experience with persons with diverse abilities and/or other relevant experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal behavior and communication skills.
  • The desire and ability to work with persons with diverse abilities and demonstrate personal suitability to promote dignity, independence, individuality.
  • Ability to work independently in a high stress environment.
  • Must be in good health with the physical ability to carry out the duties of the position and shift responsibilities.

Required Documentation

  • Valid BC Class 4 Driver's License - or willingness to obtain one within 3 months of employment.
  • RCMP Criminal Record Check (Schedule A - Employer will file).
  • MCFD Hub Screening (Employer will file).
  • First Aid with CPR Certificate.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
  • Immunization Records or Medical Exemption.
  • Signed Bonaventure Hire Package.
  • 3 References - (One must be a most recent employer, second and third must be able to speak to your ability to work with vulnerable youths).
  • Physician's Declaration.
  • TB Screen.
