Job Description
TO Wards Peace is an integrated risk-driven violence interruption model co-designed with residents to build the capacity of grassroots organizations to lead Violence Disruption Workers. The program aims to intervene in violence, prevent escalations or retaliation, and develop community-based solutions within a Public Health Approach. You will collaborate with stakeholders including institutional, community, and grassroots organizations to implement and expand this model.
The Social Development Division (SD) promotes transformative change for stronger, safer, and more equitable communities in Toronto. The SafeTO plan, adopted by City Council, guides 26 actions across 7 strategic goals. To support this, the Community Safety & Well-Being Section is hiring two (2) Community Development Officers for the TO Wards Peace Program and other upcoming roles.
Major Responsibilities
- Coordinate and implement TO Wards Peace through inter-sectoral collaboration to address violence, providing culturally competent supports, trauma access, and recovery assistance.
- Conduct risk assessments, crisis management, and safety planning to ensure effective intervention delivery.
- Develop localized, culturally appropriate community supports and connect them to broader development efforts.
- Manage partnerships and networks related to violence intervention and disruption.
- Coordinate with City services and community organizations to deliver intervention supports and promote integrated services.
- Advise and mentor community leaders and service providers, providing information and referrals.
- Design and deliver culturally and age-appropriate training, outreach, and education programs.
- Build community capacity for safety advocacy and engagement, incorporating youth violence prevention strategies.
- Support organizational development, policy, and resource development for community safety.
- Develop and review contracts for violence prevention services, ensuring quality and compliance.
- Assist in funding proposal development and budget management for the program.
- Provide updates and briefings on community risks, best practices, and models to stakeholders.
- Contribute to the City’s strategic and safety plans to promote community well-being.
- Enhance community development skills through consultation, education, and facilitation.
- Respond effectively to stakeholder inquiries, maintaining accurate records.
Key Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Sociology, Social Work, Community Health Promotion, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience in community development, advocacy, capacity building, and addressing social inequities and violence in vulnerable communities.
- Experience mobilizing community responses to violent incidents, including gun violence and gang activity.
- Experience designing culturally appropriate training and outreach materials.
- Proven ability in grant writing, budgeting, and managing community programs or projects.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and response strategies.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with diverse community and sector organizations, government, and stakeholders.
- Understanding of root causes of community violence, social determinants of health, and public health approaches.
- Knowledge of youth engagement and violence prevention principles.
- Strong conflict resolution, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Knowledge of relevant government legislation and human service systems in Toronto.
- Strong organizational, coordination, and planning skills.
- Sound judgment in public relations and partnership development.
- Ability to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
