We are seeking a Communications Specialist to help us serve our community with Kindness, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, the specialist will develop and execute strategic communication strategies to support Headwaters' Strategic Plan. The role requires working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines, utilizing organizational, writing, design, and customer service skills to tell Headwaters' stories and realize our vision of one community, caring together.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing social media and digital strategies to engage audiences and foster community.
  • Driving media relations and public affairs initiatives proactively.
  • Creating and distributing content for websites, intranet, e-newsletters, and other channels.
  • Maintaining and developing the organization’s website and intranet, collaborating with internal teams and vendors.
  • Using photography, videography, and graphic design skills to enhance storytelling.
  • Managing digital signage and designing graphics for internal and external displays.
  • Designing templates for communication tools such as patient education materials, presentations, posters, and signage.
  • Ensuring internal messages and documents align with brand standards.
  • Managing projects like annual reports and major communication initiatives.
  • Supporting media relations through press releases, inquiries, and media events.
  • Monitoring emerging issues and preparing key messages and briefing notes.
  • Collaborating with partners like the Foundation and Hospital Auxiliary.
  • Participating in meetings to support ongoing programs and initiatives.
  • Coordinating internal and external events, including advertising, marketing, and logistics.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • 3-5 years of related experience, preferably in healthcare or public sector.
  • Experience managing websites, intranets, and social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with Content Management Systems, SharePoint, Hootsuite, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and MS Office.
  • Strong writing skills, with knowledge of Canadian Press Style.
  • Excellent editing, proofreading, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to design digital and print materials adhering to brand and accessibility standards.
  • Experience planning and executing events and media activities.
  • Understanding of government relations, public policy, and healthcare environment in Ontario.
  • Strong research, critical thinking, and project management skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in communications.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with diverse groups and provide excellent stakeholder service.
