Job Summary

This role is responsible for planning, implementing, and executing a full range of integrated communications for the College, with a focus on internal communications and campus community initiatives to support strategic organizational goals. The Communications Advisor (CA) works closely with internal clients to understand their marketing goals and collaborate with our design and digital teams to bring a diverse range of projects to life, including comprehensive marketing campaigns, publications, media relations, events, collateral, web, and other digital projects.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications & Marketing, the CA will have sound knowledge of communications principles, copy writing, community building skills, and possess strong interpersonal skills. The CA will be part of Langara’s in-house Communications & Marketing team that serves a strategic function to strengthen the Langara brand and enhance the institution’s reputation.

Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic marketing advice to internal clients to help them achieve their marketing communications objectives, including developing and implementing integrated marketing communications plans.
  • Oversees complex marketing communications projects, from the initial kick off meeting with clients, to writing the creative brief, creating and managing the workback schedule, coordinating approvals, and overseeing production, ensuring budgets and deadlines are met. Writes and implements take to market plans to rollout out communications initiatives to target audiences. Maintains project dockets following the unit's workflow process and systems.
  • Writes and edits news releases, public service announcements, publications, brochures and advertising copy, web content, social media posts, and other written communications.
  • When approved by the Director or Manager, works with individual units to develop visual identity systems within the College's master brand.
  • Ensures that all work complies with relevant legislation, including CASL, FIPPA, PIPA, copyright, and protects the College's official and registered marks.
  • In keeping with College policies on purchasing, researches and recommends potential vendors for projects, including printers, promotional items, and media buying. May negotiate rates on behalf of clients and works with suppliers to complete production.
  • Participates in the review of College publications/materials to ensure that they comply with established brand standards.
  • Coordinates development, production, and distribution of printed material.
  • Provides writing and editing support to instructional and administrative departments, as required.
  • Liaises and supports the development of communications for organizational units or committees, as well as fundraising initiatives.
  • Creates and implements marketing plans to promote a wide range of College events, including major events such as convocation, welcome week, and employee recognition. Develops event collateral materials, signage, identifies and engages suppliers, and supervises volunteers.
  • Works with Langara's Institutional Research department or external suppliers to conduct market research as needed. Analyses web and social media data, digital advertising click through rates, and other analytics to assess outcomes of marketing projects and report back to clients.
  • Storyboards/writes scripts for video and multimedia projects. Liaises with Digital Content Producer/external videographers to review rough cuts, secure client approvals, and finalize video projects. Creates project shot lists for still photography shoots.
  • Utilizing media database tools such as Meltwater, creates media target lists, writes and distributes media advisories, releases, and PSA as required. Monitors and creates reports of earned media.
  • Supervises SWAP students, volunteers, and Co-op students as required. May supervise Communications Assistants.
  • Oversees marketing project costs, ensuring work is completed within approved budgets.
  • Performs other related duties and/or projects as required.

Qualifications Required

Education

  • Successful completion of an advanced diploma in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or equivalent. Additional specialized training in one or more areas: stakeholder engagement, project management, copywriting/editing, etc. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years of recent related experience as a marketing communications professional including strong strategy and planning, project management skills, client services, writing/editing, events coordination, and internal communication skills within a Mac environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in higher education marketing, internal communications, or technology marketing an asset.
  • Experience and knowledge of both traditional and digital marketing strategies and tactics.
  • Knowledge of Workfront and Microsoft O365 suite an asset.
