Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer

Position Summary

Thales Canada is seeking a Communications / Naval Combat Systems Engineer to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Naval Combat Systems Engineer will be responsible for engineering support of Naval Combat Systems, including but not limited to :

  • Navigation Systems
  • Communications Systems
  • Command and control systems
  • Data processing systems
  • Above water and underwater sensor systems
  • Ship’s weapons systems and ammunition

This support involves planning, overseeing, and executing engineering tasks within time and cost constraints to meet Key Performance Indicators, in accordance with Thales quality and commercial guidelines.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The key functions and responsibilities include :

  • Developing and reviewing combat system related technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation, and maintenance instructions.
  • Performing Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions, including equipment obsolescence, material compatibility, and disposal management.
  • Providing technical support for equipment or capability deficiencies.
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems related to combat systems, equipment, and software, including root cause analysis, risk assessments, and solutions development.
  • Managing the preparation of combat system design change documentation, including manufacturing drawings, maintenance, and installation instructions, as well as test and trials documentation.
  • Analyzing requirements related to baseline changes to ship configurations, equipment, and software.
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval.
  • Preparing work scopes for solicitation of quotations from OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, or service providers.
  • Developing engineering plans, processes, and procedures related to combat systems and ship-based software.
  • Defining, developing, and maintaining software configuration documentation.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer, Electrical, Electronics Engineering, or Naval Architecture.
  • Eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in Nova Scotia, Ontario, or British Columbia, Canada.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a Systems Engineer with Naval / Marine Communications and / or Navigation Systems within the last 10 years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Naval Combat Systems Engineering Officer.
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets.
  • Previous experience with defense contracts.
  • Language : French (Desirable, as a first or second language)

Physical Demands

  • Primarily office work, with occasional work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships.
  • May involve inspections on Naval ships, requiring bending, twisting, and working aloft.

Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule : 40 hours / week
  • Work environment : Hybrid (home and onsite at office or onboard DND ships)
  • Travel : Occasional domestic or international travel may be required.

Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), including salary and bonus, ranges from CAD 886,138.88 to CAD 154,432.71 annually. The company reserves the right to adjust compensation based on circumstances.
