Job Summary

The Communications Manager is accountable for planning, executing, and measuring strategic communications that support the WSIB’s objectives and reputation. As a trusted business partner, you’ll provide senior-level advice and direction to teams that support people with claims and businesses in Ontario. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports.

Key Accountabilities And Responsibilities
  1. Act as a technical resource, providing strategic direction, advice, and guidance to senior management in the planning of communications strategies that will deliver on business goals and objectives.
  2. Use influence and consultative approach to provide technical advice to client groups regarding communications approaches, including selling a concept, obtaining buy-in, and convincing senior decision makers of the added value to be derived from the proposed communications solutions.
  3. Use diplomacy and sensitivity to manage and analyze confidential information regarding WSIB operations, including initiatives that may result in reorganization of areas, changes in staffing, accountabilities, and functions, budgets, or other shifts in corporate direction.
  4. Apply change management principles to support cultural change and corporate objectives.
  5. Act as a business partner with client divisions and as a communications representative on cross-organization project teams.
  6. Build cooperative working relationships with client and project teams to identify needs, discuss issues, and exchange information supporting quality communications planning.
  7. Inform and educate divisional management and staff on communications initiatives and best practices, identifying opportunities for improvement and new approaches to communication challenges.
  8. Ensure the effective and consistent provision of consultative services on communications best practices during the delivery of plans.
  9. Develop and execute strategic communication plans, tools, and processes to deliver against organizational objectives, manage reputation, and enhance engagement.
  10. Recommend creative solutions reflecting current trends, technology, and industry best practices.
  11. Oversee implementation, monitor, track, and analyze results of communication plans.
  12. Manage resources, including graphic design, printing, web publishing, and social media, as required.
  13. Establish effective vendor contacts to support plan execution.
  14. Convey corporate messaging to support reputation management.
  15. Maintain knowledge of contentious issues, stakeholder concerns, and confidential business matters.
  16. Understand issues management protocols and responses.
  17. Handle highly sensitive information and participate in confidential discussions regarding strategies and stakeholder responses.
  18. Oversee execution of communication tactics.
  19. Plan content promoting WSIB’s vision and strategic plan.
  20. Provide effective writing and editing, aligned with content standards.
  21. Employ change management and employee engagement best practices.
  22. Deliver internal and external documents such as presentations, newsletters, brochures, manuals, and reports.
  23. Organize events such as meetings, town halls, promotional events, and trade shows.
Job Requirements
  • Degree in Communications, Change Management, Journalism, English, or related field.
  • At least 8 years’ experience as a communications or public relations officer or manager in the public, private, or non-profit sectors.
  • Experience in creating and developing high-quality, effective communication plans and products.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and influencing skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and digital photography software.
  • Project management certification such as PMP is preferred.
