Job summary

Matchtech North America is seeking a Communications Engineer/Designer for a permanent rail industry role. You will design and implement advanced communications systems across major transit infrastructure projects, leading design efforts and ensuring integration with BIM and discipline leads.

You will review and produce technical documentation, applying systems engineering and assurance principles, while incorporating rail cybersecurity standards and supporting construction and commissioning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's level engineering degree required; P.Eng designation considered highly desirable.
  • Experience applying systems engineering and integration principles across rail projects.
  • Strong understanding of IP-based networking and rail communications systems (SCADA, CCTV, PA, radio, access control).
  • Experience interpreting and developing design packages, specs, and test docs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of complex rail communications systems (fibre, CCTV, PA, telephony, radio, CCTV, SCADA, master clock).
  • Develop and review design deliverables (layouts, risers, elevations, wiring diagrams).
  • Oversee technical documentation for compliance (specs, reports, test plans).
  • Apply systems engineering and assurance principles to large rail projects.
  • Incorporate cybersecurity standards into system architectures for rail requirements.
  • Support construction, commissioning, site visits, and field issue resolution.
  • Collaborate with design teams, BIM specialists, and discipline leads.

Job description

Our client, a leading player in the rail industry, is looking for a talented Communications Engineer/Designer to join their dynamic team on a permanent basis. This role involves designing and implementing advanced communications systems across major transit infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design of complex communications systems, including fibre backbone networks, CCTV, access control, public address, telephony, passenger signage, radio, intrusion detection, fare systems, SCADA, and master clock solution
  • Develop and review technical design deliverables such as layouts, risers, elevations, schedules, wiring diagrams, and fibre termination diagram
  • Oversee and approve technical documentation, including specifications, reports, calculations, test plans, test procedures, and test reports to ensure compliance with project requirement
  • Apply systems engineering, systems integration, and assurance principles to communications designs for large rail infrastructure project
  • Incorporate cybersecurity standards into system architecture and ensure designs meet relevant rail cyber requirement
  • Support construction and commissioning activities, including testing and commissioning, site visits, as-built reviews, and field issue resolution.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary design teams, BIM specialists, and discipline leads to deliver fully integrated solution
  • Provide technical leadership on LRT, subway, transit hub, and rail yard projects through all phases
Job Requirement
  • Experience in rail communications systems, designing and delivering complex systems on large transit infrastructure projects
  • Engineering degree in a relevant discipline, with P.Eng. designation considered highly desirable
  • Strong understanding of IP-based networking and the full suite of rail communications systems, including SCADA, fibre networks, CCTV, passenger announcement (PA), radio, and access control
  • Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering, system integration, and assurance principles across multidisciplinary rail projects
  • Working knowledge of rail cybersecurity standards (e.g., CISSP, GICSP, IEC 62443) considered a strong asset
  • Proven ability to interpret, review, and develop technical documentation—design packages, reports, specifications, and test documentation—with precision and clarity
