Islands Trust, located in Victoria, BC, is seeking a Band 2 Team Lead for Exclusion Review Communications and Public Engagement. The role leads a communications team to advance Islands Trust Council priorities, Conservancy work, and local trust committees, with a focus on inclusive public input.

The successful candidate will combine public engagement expertise, strategic communications skills, and a strong understanding of community issues in coastal BC, reporting to the Islands Trust

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline.
  • Minimum three years of experience leading and delivering strategic communications for diverse audiences.
  • Minimum three years of experience leading complex issues management in a public sector context.
  • Minimum three years of experience providing communications advice to senior leadership.
  • Certification by International Association of Public Participation or related training/accreditation is preferred.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized public sector employment environment is a plus.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities is a plus.

Job Summary

The Team

Located in Coast Salish territory, theIslands Trustis a special purpose government responsible for protecting the unique amenities and environment of more than 450 islands and surrounding waters in the southern Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound. Created by the Province via the Islands Trust Act, Islands Trust plans and regulates local land use, coordinates with other levels of government and Indigenous Governing Bodies on key issues impacting the area, and protects land through the Islands Trust Conservancy.

The Role

The Communications and Public Engagement Team Lead will play a key role in defining and delivering public engagement and communications activities to advance the priorities and work of Islands Trust Council, Islands Trust Conservancy and local trust committees. This position leads a team of communications and engagement specialists and provides advice and support for all communications and engagement activities across the Islands Trust. This role is multi-faceted, helping to support public-facing communications through digital, media and print, and to give the public access to meaningful opportunities to have their voices heard in the decision-making process. To be successful in this work, the Engagement and Communications Team Lead will combine strong relevant experience and skills, a current awareness and understanding of issues and audiences in the communities Islands Trust serves, and a strategic mindset to inform effective advice to senior staff and elected officials.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline.
  • Minimum three years of experience leading and delivering strategic communications planning and tactics for diverse audiences.
  • Minimum three years of experience leading complex issues management in a public sector context.
  • Minimum three years of experience providing communications advice and expertise to the senior leadership of an organization.
  • Demonstrated experience working in public engagement or certification by International Association of Public Participation or related training/accreditation.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).
  • Preference may be given to qualified applicants with any or all of the following:
  • Supervisory experience in a unionized public sector employment environment.
  • Experience working in a BC municipal government organization.
  • Experience working with Indigenous organizations and/or communities.
