The Opportunity - Campus Health & Wellness Nurse - Part-time 0.4 FTE, permanent
The Health and Wellness Nurse is responsible for providing nursing services to Olds College students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors of the Campus Health and Wellness Services Centre by appointment or on a walk-in basis. The Health and Wellness Nurse will often be the first point of contact for health care issues, assessments, treatments and, as appropriate, referrals to other on-Campus and off-Campus health professionals and services. The primary functions of this role will also include developing and delivering health and wellness programming; participating in preventative and educational initiatives; assessment and, where appropriate, referral of physical and mental health issues; identification of public health issues; and collaboration with the academic schools and student housing, as required, in relation to student health issues.
Key Job Functions
Health and Safety
- Provides clinical nursing services to students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors within the scope of nursing practice for walk-ins and scheduled appointments.
- Provides emergency response nursing care including initial nursing assessments, treatment, referrals, and follow up for students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors.
- Arranges for emergency transport for students, staff, faculty, contractors and visitors when necessary.
- Reports incidents that have resulted in injuries or illness to the Olds College Occupational Health and Safety Officer and Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) as required.
- Completes and maintains patient care documentation in accordance with licensing body standards, ensuring that all health records are managed in accordance with the Alberta Health Information Act (HIA)
- Ensures that all medical equipment is maintained in good working condition.
- Coordinates inventory management for medication and supplies necessary to provide medical response and services.
- Liaises with community Professionals to develop, establish, and maintain professional working relationships that will contribute to the Campus Health and Wellness Services Centre’s success in serving the needs of the Olds College community.
- Supports the coordination of the Olds College Doctor on Campus program which provides weekly service to the campus community.

- Maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive information is a fundamental requirement for this position, ensuring the utmost discretion and integrity in handling all data and communications.
Immunization
- Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Olds College Immunization program, ensuring that the program adheres to the governing body standards working to create a safe working and learning environment.
- Coordinates yearly influenza immunization clinics for the campus community.
Wellbeing and Health Promotion
- Participates in a collaborative manner with other members of the Campus Health Wellness Services team to plan, organize, and implement strategies that promote the health and wellbeing of Olds College students, faculty, and staff. This includes a focus on identification of potential risk factors and preventative strategies.
- Develops, promotes, and implements wellbeing initiatives and communication plans that promote better health outcomes, in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Acts as a key contact for the Campus Health and Wellness Services team supporting campus health and wellbeing promotion through a coordinated and integrated approach with campus stakeholders and committees.
- Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well-being and security of all individuals at Olds College, shows a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and procedures to ensure the highest standards of protection, collaborates with colleagues to instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting.
Student Accessibility and Employee Claims Management
- Liaises with students when medically indicated absences from school are warranted and engages with stakeholders to implement strategies to support a successful return to study, or an appropriate alternative plan.
- Coordinates Fitness to Practice requirements for practicum and work integrated learning as required.
- Working in partnership with People and Culture and with all relevant parties to coordinate a team approach, to facilitate communication and to act as the central point of contact for the employee, supervisor, People and Culture Advisor, WCB office, health care providers, the insurance carrier, and union/association representative (as authorized by the employee).
- The incumbent will facilitate effective employee-centered handling of the claim process, keep the employee informed and connected, and coordinate a safe transition back to work for the employee whenever feasible.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program resulting in a Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing.
- Registered Nurse with 3-5 years nursing experience.
- Possesses or is eligible for current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurse of Alberta (CARNA) with no restrictions.
- Experience in Occupational, public, or Community Health Nursing would be an asset.
- Must possess current CPR and Standard First Aid certifications or a willingness to attain these upon hire. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider recommended.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with a positive and enthusiastic attitude, a non-threatening manner and non-judgmental approach.
- Strong and empathetic understanding of the complex issues affecting young adults.
- Ability to manage stress and time pressures while maintaining a good working attitude.
- Good working knowledge of Google and associated apps such as Google Docs as well as Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Good knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

- Nurses potentially could be exposed to biological, physical, or chemical hazards.
- May need to handle items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
