Job Scope

Under direct supervision, performs all medical record coding activities. Assigns appropriate diagnostic codes to patient charts and reports as assigned. Supports and adheres to The US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Abstract relevant clinical and demographic information from medical records to assign ICD-9 and CPT-4 codes following coding and reimbursement guidelines.
  • Identify principal and secondary diagnoses with minimal error based on national standards.
  • Achieve coding accuracy of 97% based on QA reviews.
  • Record all diagnostic procedures and assign appropriate procedure codes.
  • Request diagnoses from physicians when information is incomplete.
  • Determine and record necessary medical information.
  • Update coding procedures and guidelines regularly.
  • Collaborate with medical assistants and staff to coordinate medical information and patient charts.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all medical information.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPC certification required.
  • Completion of a course in medical record technology.
  • At least one year of medical coding experience; three years preferred.
  • Applicable certification preferred. Knowledge of medical records coding procedures and ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding systems is highly desirable.
Physical Demands

The physical requirements include sitting, standing, talking, hearing, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. May involve lifting up to 40 lbs and extensive walking or standing. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

Work Environment

The environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, radiation, and other conditions typical of an oncology/hematology clinic. In-person interaction with staff and clients is required. Minimal travel may be necessary.
