Salary
The salary range for this position is CAD $30.58/Hr. - CAD $38.15/Hr.

Summary

Reporting to the Coding Coordinator, the Coder (Health Information Administrator 1) assists in the presentation of statistical information and participates on organizational committees by providing advice regarding codes, classification, mapping and data collection. Your duties will include:

  • Process corrections for abstracts for data quality.
  • Maintain the computerized abstracting system.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Provide data related to specific projects and/or assignments as requested
What You Bring

Education:

  • Graduated from an approved Health Information Management Program.
  • Canadian College of Health Information Management (CHIM) Certified and current active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to code/abstract in the current CIHI and BC Ministry of Health standard classification system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computerized coding and abstracting systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology.
  • Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing, work effectively with others, and interpersonal skills

Who Are We

Health Information Management (HIM) is a leader in the collection, storage and use of patient information within British Columbia. As a consolidated Lower Mainland department of PHC, over 1,500 HIM staff work at more than 40geographically dispersedlocations across Fraser Health, PHC, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health. Staff work in service areas including Records Management, Registration Services, Transcription Services & Health Information Exchange, Coding & Informatics Services, and Strategic Planning, Projects & Business Optimization.

Staff working in Coding & Informatics Services take patient health information and assign standardized codes to structure it into viable data for health care decision makers. This critical data is then used internally for decision making, performance measurement, quality improvement and externally for hospital funding, clinical research, and national benchmarking.

Your Day to Day:

  • Perform coding and abstracting duties for various databases such as CIHI Discharge Abstract Database, Trauma Registry, Canadian Neonatal Network, and BC Perinatal Database.
  • Ensure data quality by reviewing data capture for accuracy and completeness and assessing documentation within patient records.
  • Contribute to the development of data definitions, modeling, and design activities.
  • Complete period end functions and system updates/corrections, ensuring appropriate coding and abstracting for discharged patients.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and service excellence, making recommendations and implementing changes as needed.
  • Provide data for specific projects, including research and administrative assignments, by collecting, analyzing, and forwarding information as requested.
  • Assist in presenting statistical information to various parties, including hospital departments, committees, and outside agencies.
  • Contribute to policy and procedure development by reviewing existing policies, identifying problems or inefficiencies, evaluating technical literature, and making recommendations.
  • Serve on organizational committees, acting as a liaison and resource person for Health Information Management, providing advice on codes, classification, and data collection, and making recommendations as needed.
