Work Arrangements:

Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, this position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement (combination of working onsite and telework). Employees in this position who telework will be required to travel to the identified work site at least three times per week or a minimum of 60% of their regular work schedule at their own expense

The Role

We are looking for a Coastal Modeller to support our Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering (OCRE) Research Centre. The Coastal Modeller would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

NRC-OCRE supports a broad cross-section of industry sectors by developing creative and practical solutions to engineering challenges in rivers, lakes, and marine environments. We provide expertise and tools to identify, adapt, and integrate advanced solutions into systems that improve the performance and safety of ocean, coastal, and marine operations, meet the challenges of climate change, and protect infrastructure, property and people from severe weather events and other environmental risks.

NRC-OCRE is seeking to hire a Coastal Modeller to contribute to coastal engineering, coastal hazards, river engineering and/or water resources engineering research being conducted as part of our Climate-Resilient Built Environment initiative. The primary responsibility of the role will be to contribute to the achievement of NRC-OCRE’s goals of impactful Research & Development (R&D) by delivering modeling, technologies, and innovations through our broad spectrum of engineering research activities. The Coastal Modeller will also be expected to contribute to the development of capabilities, processes, and standards to advance and maximize the impact of our work. The successful candidate will be expected to be involved in client and partner engagement, proposal development, project management, dissemination of research, and technical services delivery. The position requires background and skills in some of the following areas: surface water hydraulics/hydrodynamics, numerical modelling of physical processes in coastal and/or riverine environments (waves, hydrodynamics, and sediment transport), coastal engineering, coastal processes, river engineering, riverine processes, flood/erosion risk management, physical modelling, nature-based solutions, climate science and modelling, data analysis and interpretation, and project management

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Graduate degree (MSc or MAppSc) from a recognized institution in Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Coastal, or Ocean Engineering or Geosciences.

A Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, Water Resources, Coastal, or Ocean Engineering or Geosciences is considered an asset.

An equivalency may be considered for candidates who are 6 months to completing a Masters with experience in coastal, river or water resources engineering.

  • Experience in directing or overseeing the application of engineering and applied science principles, including problem and constraint identification, streamlined problem-solving approaches, modelling and simulation, analysis, and clear and effective dissemination of technical findings to a range of audiences through written and oral forms of communication (e.g., reports, presentations).
  • Experience in engagement/marketing activities, and/or in the development and management of effective partnerships and collaborations.
  • Experience with numerical modelling or physical modelling, and analysis to provide solutions to a variety of topics related to coastal, river and/or water resource engineering challenges including flood and erosion hazard assessment and management, wave impacts on shorelines and infrastructure, performance of hydraulic structures, water quality assessment and risk management, and climate change impacts assessment and adaptation.
  • Experience in numerical modelling of riverine and/or coastal physical processes (e.g., hydrodynamics, waves, sediment transport, water quality), and application of programming for data processing/analysis.
  • Experience in programming techniques, data collection and analysis in Geographic Information System (GIS) software to support coastal/river/water resources engineering analysis.
  • Experience in executing technical projects, proposal development, project management, and working in multidisciplinary teams.

Experience refers to at least three (3) years of experience.

Condition of Employment


A thorough security clearance process will be applied.
For a Secret Clearance, verification of background information over a period of 10 years is required. Individuals must have lived in Canada for a sufficient period of time to enable the security screening process.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Advanced skills in oral and written communication in English, writing clear and concise proposals, reports, conference papers and/or journal papers and effectively communicating results to clients and/or at scientific conferences.
  • Understanding of project management principles, practices, tools, and techniques required to complete assigned project tasks on time, within budget, and with the desired quality and impact.
  • Knowledge of the principles of fluid mechanics, coastal engineering, river engineering, water resources, coastal and/or riverine physical processes (hydrodynamics, water quality, and sediment transport).
  • Solid knowledge of the principal numerical models to investigate a diverse range of problems related to coastal engineering, river engineering and/or water resources engineering.
  • Knowledge of the theory of numerical modelling and physical modelling to investigate a diverse range of problems related to coastal engineering, river engineering, water resources, and water quality.
  • Knowledge of applying statistical methods to support coastal and/or water resources engineering (e.g., hydrological frequency analysis, hypothesis testing, extreme value analysis).
  • Knowledge of applying computer programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, FORTRAN, C++) and GIS software to read, process, analyze, and write geospatial data.

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the JRO/AsRO level, which is an early-career level position and the salary range is $63,470 to $114,354.

NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
