Dillons Coastal Engineering Group is seeking a talented Coastal Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals. You will have the exciting opportunity to work on a variety of coastal projects across Canada, providing our clients with integrated and expert solutions. This position is available at all offices, with a strong preference for our Hamilton office.

Responsibilities

What your day will look like

Project Management & Technical Leadership

  • Lead and manage coastal engineering projects, providing technical guidance to project teams on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Develop specialized technical expertise in coastal engineering projects, including coastal erosion and protection, coastal flooding assessments, port and harbour development, and shoreline management planning.
  • Conduct advanced hydrotechnical assessments specifically for coastal environments, including wave transformation, storm surge modeling, and tidal analysis.
  • Coordinate and manage the coastal engineering components of diverse multidisciplinary projects, from small studies to large-scale infrastructure developments.
  • Develop and oversee field investigations, data collection programs, and monitoring programs for coastal projects.
  • Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary project teams, including engineers, environmental scientists, planners, and other technical specialists.

Learning & Development

  • Commit to continuous self-development and professional growth within the specialized field of coastal engineering.
  • Provide technical direction, training recommendations, coaching, and mentorship to junior staff within the coastal engineering team.
  • Enhance Dillon’s reputation through active participation in relevant professional associations and committees focused on coastal issues.

Qualifications

What you will need to succeed

  • Undergraduate degree in civil, coastal engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited university or college. (Masters preferred)
  • At least 3 years of professional experience, preferably in the consulting industry, with a focus on coastal engineering projects.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • A professional engineering license or the ability to obtain one within one year.

Experience

Required Experience

  • Strong working knowledge of coastal hydrodynamic and numerical modeling systems.
  • Experience in project design or construction involving coastal structures, ecosystem restoration, and/or navigation and dredging.
  • Knowledge of design guidelines, codes, and standards related to coastal and marine engineering.
  • Ability to document the basis of design, including data analysis, assumptions, calculations, and conclusions.
  • Experience considering climate change and sea-level rise in coastal engineering design and planning.
  • Experience with coastal risk assessments, storm surge inundation mapping, and vulnerability analysis.
  • Familiarity with scripting software such as Matlab or Python.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team of engineers, scientists, geomatics specialists, CAD drafters, and surveyors.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for report writing, presentations, and client interactions.
  • Flexibility to travel sometimes with short notice to meet project deadlines.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with construction inspection and contract administration for coastal projects.
  • Experience with SFINCS (Super-Fast INundation of CoastS) modeling software.
  • Experience with other coastal modeling software such as Delft3D, MIKE21, TELEMAC, or SWAN.
