Job summary

City of Mississauga is seeking a Co-Op Student - Traffic Signals to support a range of traffic signal programs and related operations. You will assist in systems operation to ensure safe and efficient traffic control within the City.

Under the Manager, Traffic Signals and Street Lighting, you will participate in various tasks and may be involved with field work, documentation, and coordination with external agencies. This temporary position runs January–April 2027.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a recognized post-secondary co-op program.
  • Eligible to complete an approved Work Term during January–April 2027.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and assist in day-to-day operation of the City's central traffic control system.
  • Support various traffic signal programs, contracts, and maintenance.
  • Assist in implementing the Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS).
  • Conduct traffic field studies to address public and Council concerns.
  • Respond to information requests from external agencies, staff and Council.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing legal drawings (PHM-125).
  • Review contractor invoices for accuracy.
  • May work on construction sites and roadways in varying weather conditions.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Duties vary with academic background and experience.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, Traffic Signals and Street Lighting, the successful candidate will perform and assist in tasks related to a variety of traffic signal programs and traffic signal complaints to ensure the safe and efficient operation of traffic control signals within the City of Mississauga.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the day-to-day operation of the City's central traffic control system.
  • Assist in a variety of traffic signal related programs, contracts and agreements including construction and maintenance.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) and related field devices.
  • Conduct traffic field studies and observations to address concerns from the public and Council.
  • Respond to various requests for information received from external agencies, staff and Council.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of legal drawings (PHM-125).
  • Review contractor invoices for correctness and accuracy.
  • May be required to work on construction sites and roadways in varying weather conditions.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Previous co-op experience related to "Transportation Engineering Technology" would be an asset;
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of various traffic studies, such as turning movement counts and left turn queue studies;
  • Must demonstrate knowledge in traffic engineering theory and practice, Ontario Traffic Manual, and Highway Traffic Act;
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office and traffic related software applications;
  • Strong MicroStation or related CAD experience is required;
  • Must demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills along with strong customer service skills;
  • Must demonstrate ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision;
  • Must possess a valid Class "G" driver's license with drivers record acceptable to the City and use of own vehicle is required.

Hourly Rate/Salary: 20.64 - 24.53
