Co-op Student – Construction Inspector (Civil Engineering)

Contract Full-Time; 16 Months (May 05, 2025 – August 28, 2026)
Hourly Rate: $23.74/hour
Work Mode: On-site
Location: 2 Copper Road, Brampton
Hours of work: 35 Hours per week
Mandatory Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Civil Engineering program or closely related field of study.
- Requires access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license.
- Legally authorized to work in Canada for the full duration of the 16-month term.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Foreperson of Construction Inspection, the incumbent will assist senior construction inspectors to inspect capital and/or development related watermains, sewers, roads, bridges, culverts, and noise walls ensuring all work is constructed in accordance with Region Standards, Specifications, and contracted documents.
What you will do in this role:
- Assist senior inspectors on construction sites to ensure all work is performed in accordance with the Region Standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other legislation.
- Maintain accurate records of materials used on site ensuring quantities are tracked accurately and quality of materials is consistent throughout the construction process.
- Maintain a daily diary and provide reports of construction activities to senior inspector.
- Scheduling of water interruptions and reviewing customers impacted.
- Book via Water Operations any required valving and tapping.
- Measuring of various materials onsite during construction and capturing quantities to provide to senior inspector for progress payments.
- Assist senior inspector in completing as-built construction drawings.
- Utilize GPS technology to accurately locate and update positions of new joints and transitions on large diameter watermains.
- Oversee pressure tests of watermains and document results.
- Printing and scanning of engineering drawings and related contracted documents.
- Checks to ensure all lines and grades provided by surveyors comply with the elevations as shown on the field construction drawings. Notes discrepancies and reports possible conflicts with other structures and utilities to senior inspector.
- Assist with investigating and responding to resident complaints.
- Assist in preparation and compilation of monthly and final progress payment certificates.
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of project notice updates and water interruptions to the public.
- Maintain good public relations with contractors, consultants, and the general public.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What the role requires:
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited Engineering Sciences program through a recognized University or College (giving preference to Civil studies).
- Second- and third-year students will be given primary consideration.
- Must be enrolled in a Co-operative education program through the University, (as required for a duration of 8 or 16 months).
- Must have a good understanding of construction methods.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent judgement and interpersonal skills to liaise with external and internal clients.
- Ability to work independently at times or as part of a team.
- Possess a valid driver's license and daily access to a vehicle.
- Be able to supply own green patched safety boots.
- Be able to meet the physical requirements of the job.
