Co-op Student, Bioinformatics Analyst/Programmer

BC Cancer has an opportunity for a co-op student to join our interdisciplinary academic research team under Dr. Samuel Aparicio. Research in our group has yielded important and insightful advances in understanding tumour evolution, specifically how cancers initiate, develop, and acquire resistance to treatment. We seek a trainee to support our computational team working on multi-omic cancer data analysis. The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers, students, technologists, programmers, and data analysts on projects including:

What You’ll Do

  1. Develop and execute reproducible workflows using tools like Snakemake/WDL.
  2. Collaborate with lab personnel to generate and organize data.
  3. Design, develop, and test analysis pipelines.
  4. Work with biologists, pathologists, and stakeholders to ensure relevance and interpretability.
  5. Engage in advanced projects such as exploratory data analysis, depending on experience.

Skills & Abilities

  1. Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related fields.
  2. Familiarity with programming languages like Python and R; experience with others is a plus.
  3. Skills in statistical programming and data manipulation.
  4. Understanding software development principles: documentation, version control, upfront design.
  5. Experience with cloud computing (Azure) and UNIX HPC clusters.
  6. Interest in research and biology, with enthusiasm for biological datasets.

  1. Understanding of Indigenous-specific racism and systemic issues, with initiatives to promote inclusion and safety.
  2. Awareness of social, economic, political impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous peoples, and familiarity with related legislation and frameworks.

  2. Basic knowledge of social determinants of health and colonial impacts, with a commitment to legislative and provincial commitments.
