Co-op Rehab Aide Job Description

The co-op aide is an individual currently enrolled in a health science major or an entry-level physical therapy degree program accredited by the Certification and Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

The primary responsibilities include assisting inpatient rehabilitation staff with daily operations in accordance with State licensing regulations, departmental standards, policies, and professional guidelines.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Assist with ordering supplies and inventory control under the supervision of the department manager.
  2. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of rehabilitation equipment on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  3. Support supervising therapists in patient care, adhering to state licensing regulations, and providing care for patients across a wide age range, from adolescents to geriatrics.
  4. Under the direct supervision of a Physical Therapist, perform physical therapy interventions in which coursework has been completed and competency has been demonstrated, applicable only during active co-op rotations.
  5. Assist inpatient Occupational Therapists with equipment and patient care as instructed.
  6. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in a health science or entry-level physical therapy program accredited by CAPTE.
  • Completed prerequisite coursework required by the enrollment institution for co-op participation.
  • While on active co-op, considered a student per state licensing regulations.
Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with staff.
  • Decision-making skills and basic healthcare knowledge to perform duties effectively (up to 90% of work time).
  • Approximately three months of orientation to familiarize with departmental and hospital policies, standards of care, and specific procedures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for interaction with patients (up to 50%), team members (up to 80%), and families (up to 10%).
  • Demonstrated competence in delegated physical therapy interventions.
Working Conditions:
  • Prolonged walking and standing; lifting and transferring; awareness of safety to prevent injury.
  • Potential exposure to critically ill patients (up to 10%), which may induce stress and fatigue.
  • Work in hospital environments with possible exposure to blood, body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases.
Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
