Job description

The Opportunity

Company, Department: Nova Scotia Power, Power Production

Location: Point Tupper, NS

Closing date: March 21st, 2025

Are you ready to apply your knowledge in the real world? We are currently looking for an Engineering Co-op Student to join our Power Production – Point Tupper/Biomass team in a temporary position (May-August 2025) reporting to the Reliability Engineer.

During your time with us, you will get exposure to a variety of systems, equipment, and processes required to generate electricity in a regulated utility. The education and co-op experience will provide the student with an understanding of thermal power generation practices and specific knowledge of how a regulated power utility works.

What you’ll do:

Your key areas of responsibility will include:

  1. The successful candidate will work with Power Production management and engineering to review boiler data collected throughout the year and input it into reliability modelling software.
  2. Comparisons and analysis to previous years' data will be collected to forecast future boiler maintenance requirements.
  3. Assist with capital and maintenance planning as well as engineering and organizing of work.
  4. The candidate will gain technical experience on the design, function, and maintenance of boilers in thermal generating stations.
  5. The role will involve both office and field work, with some field data collection required.

You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

Who you are:

  1. The student must be enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year of their Engineering degree program.
  2. Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Excel, and Word) and other computer applications would be an asset.
  3. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to work in a team and/or independently.
  4. Must have proven technical writing, reporting, and researching skills. Experience working with software is considered an asset.
