Job summary

thyssenkrupp Materials NA in Port Coquitlam, BC, is seeking a Punch Machine Operator to produce copper busbars and components. You will set up and operate a Boschert CU Profi or similar, create CNC programs, and ensure parts meet tight tolerances.

The role is 2nd shift, Tuesday to Friday, 6 am to 4 pm, with responsibilities including loading copper bar stock, tool offsets, first-article inspections, and continuous improvement of tooling and processes.

Qualifications

• 2-4+ years operating and programming CNC fabrication equipment; copper busbar experience preferred.
• Hands-on experience with metal fabrication centers that combine punching, drilling, milling, tapping, and shearing.
• Proficiency with CAD/CAM for 2.5D profiles (e.g., importing SolidWorks, DXF, defining toolpaths, nesting).
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and understand tolerances.
• Comfortable editing CNC/ISO-style code and troubleshooting offsets, tools, and sequences.
• Experience with measurement tools and inspection documentation.
• Strong safety mindset and ability to lift and handle copper bar stock.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate a Boschert CU Profi or similar machine to produce copper busbars and components per drawings and work orders.
• Install and verify punches, dies, drills/taps, milling tools, deburring heads, and shear blades with accurate tool offsets.
• Load, clamp, and align copper bar stock to meet program requirements and ensure positional accuracy.
• Perform first-article and in-process inspections, making real-time adjustments to maintain tolerances.
• Create, edit, and optimize CNC/CAM programs, including CAD import, toolpath generation, nesting, offsets, and post-processing.
• Conduct simulations, dry runs, and on-machine prove-outs to validate toolpaths and improve cut/punch quality.
• Maintain organized program libraries, setup sheets, revision histories, and tooling documentation.
• Interpret detailed engineering drawings and verify features using precision metrology tools.
• Monitor tooling wear, machine status, alarms, coolant systems, and perform preventive maintenance and TPM tasks.
• Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance cycle time, quality, tool life, and material utilization.

Key Accountabilities:

• Set up and operate a Boschert CU Profi (or similar machine) to produce copper busbars and components per engineering drawings and work orders.
• Install and verify punches, dies, drills/taps, milling tools, deburring heads, and shear blades while calibrating accurate tool offsets.
• Load, clamp, and align copper bar stock to meet program requirements and ensure consistent positional accuracy.
• Perform first-article and in-process inspections, making real-time adjustments to maintain dimensional tolerances.
• Create, edit, and optimize CNC/CAM programs, including CAD import, toolpath generation, nesting, offsets, and post-processing.
• Conduct simulations, dry runs, and on-machine prove-outs to validate toolpaths, eliminate collisions, and improve cut/punch quality.
• Maintain organized program libraries, setup sheets, revision histories, and tooling documentation for repeatable production.
• Interpret detailed engineering drawings and verify critical features using precision metrology tools.
• Monitor tooling wear, machine status, alarms, coolant systems, and perform routine preventive maintenance and 5S/TPM tasks.
• Support continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance cycle time, quality, tool life, and material utilization.

• Competent with measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and inspection documentation.
• Strong safety mindset; able to lift and handle copper bar stock safely.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience on Boschert CU Profi or similar brands/models
• Familiarity with on-machine software and/or offline CAM used for busbar programming, knowledge of bar feeders and deburring units.
• Knowledge of basic electrical busbar applications (hole patterns, slot tolerances, edge radiusing for dielectric strength, oxide removal).
• Forklift certification a plus.

Job Compensation

$23.74 - $33.09
