Job description

Job Description: Mental Health Clinician

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reports to the Coordinator or designate. Utilizing advanced clinical knowledge, the clinician contributes to service efficiency and practice advancement. Working within organizational standards as part of an interdisciplinary treatment team, the focus is on short-term counselling. The role involves providing advanced clinical practice, assessment, intervention, treatment, outreach, consultation, and referral for clients and their caregivers/families experiencing mental health and substance use issues. Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet operational needs.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Master's Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution.
  • Three (3) years recent related experience, including two (2) years in substance use or concurrent disorders.
  • At least 2 years' experience working within or with Indigenous Communities, demonstrated by meeting two or more of the following criteria:
    • Experience collaborating with Indigenous health and wellness organizations, providing services to Indigenous individuals and families.
    • Experience delivering health services/programs that incorporate Indigenous teachings, knowledge, or cultural practices.
    • Extensive knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous health and wellness services on Vancouver Island.

Additional requirements include knowledge of mental health and addiction issues, assessment and treatment methodologies, crisis intervention, and relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act and Guardianship Act. A valid BC Driver's License is also required.
