Job Title: Clinical Nursing Instructor

Course: NU RS 4L03 – BNMN - Nursing Foundations: Care of Families and Communities – Pediatrics ( 2 positions)

Department: Nursing

Term of Appointment: Contracts for this course are 9 weeks starting the week of September 18, 2025, with two 12-hour shifts 0630-1830 per week (either Thursday & Friday or Saturday & Sunday).

Nominal Hours: 324

Wage Rate: $43.26-$49.95 per hour*

* The wage rate is determined by seniority as outlined in A rticle 16 and Appendix B of the CUPE 4207-Unit 4 collective agreement.

Duties :

Reporting to the Chair / Assistant Chair-Clinical , Department of Nursing, the Clinical Nursing Instructor is responsible to:

  • Prepare for and s upervise students in a clinical setting for the experiential component of the course .

  • Collaborat e with the course instructor and lab coordinator to ensure student activities are align ed with the course syllabus and learning objectives .

  • Prepare patient assignments before students’ arrival on the unit (for hospital placemen t s ) carefully considering each student’s experience level and capabilit ies and course learning objectives .

  • Review the student’s preparation and plan for their clinical activities with attention and integration of nursing, pathophysiological, pharmacologic, and therapeutic concepts.

  • Encourage an inquiring, theory, and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.

  • Facilitate interprofessional and intraprofessional communication among students and all members of the health care team or agency .

  • Model patient-centered care.

  • Familiariz e students with the relevant policies and protocols in the clinical setting with emphasis on any health & safety requirements .

  • Provide ongoing verbal feedback to students and maintain a professional relationship with all learners .

  • Assess journal reflections, and learning plans, and provide constructive feedback to students. Mark all assignments designated as the responsibility of the Clinical Nursing Instructor in the syllabus.

  • Complete regular, comprehensive anecdotal notes regarding student progress and advise the course professor immediately of serious or ongoing student concerns.

  • Identify gaps and faci litate the development and implementation of studen t plans in partnership with the course instructor as required .

  • F acilitate student meetings / post-clinical conference s, and coordinate appropriate resources (e.g., multi-media) . Foster discussion and reflection to enhance a positive and respectful learning environment .

  • Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation .

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a BScN; Master’s degree preferred;

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario;

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experience as a nurse ;

  • Clinical work experience in inpatient hospital pediatrics within the last 10 years and/ or clinical teaching experience in inpatient hospital pediatrics within the last 10 years;

  • Desire to instruct and share knowledge with nursing students ;

  • Previous experience as a preceptor or with clinical instruction would be an asset ;

  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity , and inclusion ;

  • Ability to address concerns and manage difficult situations , and to identify and act upon emergency situations;

  • Effective organizational, time management, and communication skills ;

  • Ability to m eet the clinical site occupational and immunization requirements .

Note: Successful a pplicants are expected to supervise all scheduled/rescheduled clinical dates for the course they accept . This ensures consistency and improves the clinical experience for our students.
