The role requires a BScN, current Ontario RN registration, and at least 3 years’ clinical experience in inpatient mental health or clinical teaching.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a BScN; Master’s degree preferred;
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
• Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experience as a nurse;
• Clinical work experience in inpatient acute mental health nursing within the last 10 years and/or clinical teaching experience in inpatient mental health nursing within the last 10 years;
• Previous experience as a preceptor or with clinical instruction would be an asset;
• Demonstrated commitment to human rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion;
• Ability to address concerns and manage difficult situations, and to identify and act upon emergency situations;
• Effective organizational, time management, and communication skills;
• Ability to obtain Police Record Check prior to contract start date;
• Ability to meet site occupational and immunization requirements.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for and supervise students in a clinical setting for the experiential component of the course.
• Collaborate with the course instructor and lab coordinator to ensure student activities align with the syllabus and learning objectives.
• Prepare patient assignments before students’ arrival on the unit, considering experience level and objectives.
• Review student preparation and plan for their clinical activities with nursing concepts integration.
• Encourage an inquiring, theory- and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.
• Facilitate interprofessional and intraprofessional communication among students and health care team.
• Model patient-centered care.
• Familiarize students with policies and safety requirements.
• Provide ongoing verbal feedback and maintain professional relationships with learners.
• Assess journal reflections and provide constructive feedback; mark assignments as designated.
• Complete regular anecdotal notes and report concerns to the course professor.
• Identify gaps and support development of student plans with course instructor.
• Facilitate student meetings and coordinate resources to support learning.
• Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation.
