Job description
Clinical Learning Technician, College of Nursing, Weyburn

The College of Nursing is the largest non-departmentalized college at the University of Saskatchewan and is among the most distributed with seven campuses across the province. This position is based in Weyburn and reports to the Provincial Lab Manager in Prince Albert.

Primary Purpose: To work as an interdisciplinary team member who supports the implementation of simulated learning experiences for the College of Nursing students in the nursing clinical skills lab. You are integral to providing and maintaining the clinical learning area as a high caliber service unit for the College of Nursing. You will support associated lab activities within the nursing clinical skills lab.

Nature of Work: You will work collaboratively and independently to support lab activities within the clinical skills lab, utilizing a sound working knowledge and skill set related to healthcare procedures. You support the smooth and efficient running of the lab on a day-to-day basis, including pre-lab preparation, setup, support, and cleanup with minimal or no supervision. You are responsible for the routine maintenance of the simulation models and maintenance of adequate inventory levels. This position may experience constant interruptions, changing priorities, strict deadlines, multiple competing demands, addressing multiple complex logistics, and moderate/heavy physical labor and requires excellent time management skills.

You will have significant contact with students and faculty, which requires excellent communication and customer service skills.

Typical Duties:

  • Working collaboratively with lab instructors, you provide educational course support, equipment and supply management, facility management and customer service. Typical duties include:
  • Coordinates the operational aspects of lab courses to ensure they run smoothly and efficiently. This includes pre-lab preparations, setup with required supplies and equipment, provision of support during lab, and cleanup after all labs.
  • Ensures all equipment is operating properly prior to lab.
  • Works collaboratively with the Provincial Lab Manager and Senior Lab Technicians for simple equipment-related problem solving.
  • Manages routine maintenance of manikins and partial task trainers according to established policies and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the Provincial Lab Manager, manages equipment and supply lists for lab courses and updates as necessary.
  • Manages consumable supplies inventory and ensures that all supplies are current.
  • Maintains the lab as a clean, uncluttered hospital/clinic environment.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.

Education: Successful completion of Grade 12. Nursing education with preference given to previous registration as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or Continuing Care Aide.

Experience: Two years of health care experience is required.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal; effective organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail; ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team; ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy; proven ability to work on multiple projects with competing demands to meet deadlines; demonstrated ability to utilize various calendaring systems such as Microsoft Outlook; demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software; strong initiative and willingness to learn. The ability to respectfully interact and create positive relations with diverse faculty, staff, and students with a focus on tact, discretion, and cultural sensitivity.

Salary: The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $23.35 - 30.61 per hour. The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
