Job description

Job Summary:

The Department of Pathobiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison, is seeking applicants for a clinical instructor in Anatomic Pathology. The position has a negotiable start date in late summer or early fall of 2025, with an annual appointment that may be renewed annually or for multiple years. This full-time role emphasizes clinical service, diagnostic pathology, and mentoring of pathology residents and DVM students. Opportunities for growth and independence depend on the applicant's interests. The successful candidate will have access to a diverse diagnostic caseload from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Milwaukee County Zoo, and specialty clinics, along with collaboration opportunities with COPLOW, involvement in instructional programs, and potential research projects. Time off for ACVP exam study is provided if needed. The appointment is fixed-term for one year, with renewal likely contingent upon funding, program needs, and performance.

The School and Department offer a collaborative environment with resources in various disciplines, including infectious disease, oncology, and food animal medicine. The new $130 million veterinary teaching hospital, opened in 2024, provides state-of-the-art facilities. UW-Madison was ranked in the top 5 in 2025 by US News & World Report. Responsibilities:

  1. Rotate through necropsy, surgical biopsy, and histology services.
  2. Perform gross post-mortem exams, supervise veterinary students, and communicate with clinicians during necropsy.
  3. Interpret histopathology, collaborate with clinicians and residents, and prepare case materials for rounds during biopsy and histology services.
  4. Train and evaluate pathology residents semi-annually.
  5. Contribute to resident training, rounds, didactic teaching, and mentorship roles.
  6. Engage with the new OnWard curriculum starting Fall 2025, providing diverse teaching opportunities.
  7. Additional teaching and outreach activities are available.

Education:

Required: DVM/VMD or equivalent degree, terminal degree.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least 3 years of anatomic pathology training, be US citizens or permanent residents, and eligible for Wisconsin licensure. Licensing in Wisconsin is required at the start of employment as the practice involves privately owned animals.

License/Certification:

Required: Wisconsin Veterinary License, effective at the start of employment.
