Overview
The Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for leading and coordinating activities of an interdisciplinary clinical project team in the analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, and support of clinical applications. This includes analyzing the structure and processing of health information for clinical decision-making and building support systems to automate that processing. Focus will be on the build and maintenance of nursing, physician, and interprofessional documentation, order sets, and mPages.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provides leadership for the overall analysis, design, implementation, testing, monitoring, and support of clinical applications.
- Captures clinical requirements, converts them to technical requirements, and transforms them into working solutions by configuring existing clinical applications or developing new technology.
- Ensures implementation design decisions address cross-functional needs and embody patient-focused care principles.
- Monitors and maintains data quality and integrity by documenting, analyzing, processing, and following up on fixes, enhancements, and problems.
- Ensures all clinical applications support patient confidentiality in accordance with PHIPA legislation.
- Provides support and education to end users to ensure effective and safe usage of clinical systems.
- Processes end-user feedback and requests, coordinating clinical application changes.
- Liases with support organizations to meet service level agreements.
- Participates in committees, work groups, or task forces to facilitate development and revision of clinical applications.
- Acts as a communication coordinator between end users, IT, system administrators, and vendors.
- Participates in benefits measurement and quality assurance activities, including developing measurement tools and reporting results.
- Identifies process improvement opportunities and recommends redesigns supporting patient care and productivity.
- Works with stakeholders to develop report specifications and testing requirements.
- Designs and builds enhancements to the Electronic Health Record and maintains system documentation.
- Leads system testing for upgrades and develops rollout strategies.
- Develops training materials and communicates updates to users.
- Participates in issue and request management processes.
- Participates in hiring for the IT team.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree (Nursing or other clinical discipline preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related discipline.
- Master’s degree in Health Informatics or related fields (preferred).
Qualifications
- Understanding of clinical workflows, requirements gathering, and system design.
- Experience with Hospital Information Systems, preferably Cerner.
- Previous experience with clinical system implementation.
- Clinical background, 5 years preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of HL7 interfaces.
- Leadership skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of process improvement methodologies.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Team player, self-starter, motivated.
- Knowledge of patient confidentiality laws.
- Awareness of healthcare trends, standards, and legal issues.
