This temporary part-time role provides hands-on experience under licensed staff, fostering skills in holistic, patient-centered care within a teaching hospital environment. Responsibilities include supporting activities of daily living, participating in a range of clinical areas, and developing competencies toward a registered nursing role.

Qualifications

• Nursing students enrolled in a College of Nurses of Ontario approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required.
• Ability to aid with activities of daily living under supervision of a registered nurse or registered practical nurse.
• Knowledge of a safety culture in a health care setting in compliance with OHSA.
• Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated flexibility and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and able to work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living under RN/RPN supervision.
• Support care delivery across clinical areas to promote wellness.
• Contribute to patient safety and holistic care planning.
• Participate in teaching and research activities as needed.

Salary Range: $20.60 - $20.60 /hour

This is a temporary part-time position that is anticipated to extend until March 31, 2027, and subject to the availability of work

Through a patient and family-centered approach, the Clinical Extern (nursing) will work under the direct and/or indirect supervision of registered nursing staff, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team as an unregulated care provider, to promote and advocate for wellness while ensuring the delivery of holistic, high quality and safe care to patients.

This is an exciting opportunity for nursing students to work in a clinical environment where they can develop their clinical skills and expertise, knowledge, and self-confidence as they prepare to transition into a registered nursing role. A variety of clinical areas have positions available for Clinical Extern (nursing).

Reporting to the Professional Practice Partnership Program, the Clinical Extern (nursing) will work part-time hours. The scheduling of these hours will be determined based on organizational needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts.

Expected start date: November 2026

Essential Qualifications

• Nursing Students enrolled in a College of Nurses of Ontario approved baccalaureate or diploma nursing program
• Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
• Ability to aid with activities of daily living under the supervision of a registered nurse or registered practical nurse
• Knowledge of a safety culture in a health care setting in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Ability to apply effective body mechanics and lift and transfer skills to meet physical demands
• Effective written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated flexibility and organizational skills
• Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and the ability to work as part of a team

Immunization Requirements
