Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to become a member of a great team with a flexible work environment.

The Mercury Disability Board is a non for profit, legislated community-based organization. The purpose of the MDB is to implement the terms of the settlement arising out of the contamination by mercury and other pollutants of the English and Wabigoon River systems per the Memorandum of Agreement signed in November 1985, and the Mercury Contamination Settlement Act assented to in July 1986. The Board’s mandate is to administer and oversee the assessment and compensation process.

Role

The MDB administers a reformed mercury contamination compensatory process. These positions are open to all, including eligible Wabaseemoong Independent Nations and Grassy Narrows First Nation members.

Reporting

The Community Navigator is the primary MDB contact for assigned compensation applicants and may provide assistance to the Clinical Manager as required.

  • Liaison and main point of contact for applicants and assists applicants at every step of the assessment process
  • Assists applicants in understanding, preparing for and moving through the assessment process in a smooth, effective, and positive manner
  • Liaises with First Nation based Community Support Worker(s)
  • Uploads applicant information/letters in a timely manner
  • Prepares correspondence to applicants for mailing and uploads to applicant files in a timely manner
Follows-up with applicants/Community Support Worker(s) on
  • Outstanding documentation identified by applicant as intending to submit
  • Scheduled assessment times and details
  • Travel arrangements as needed
  • May provide follow-up with assigned applicants for assessment outcome discussions
Qualifications
  • Robust combination of education and experience (working with First Nations communities and members)
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Strong team player with attention to detail, organizational and time-management skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Cultural and Psychological Workplace safety
  • Knowledge specific to the MDB and the work we do is a distinct asset
  • An understanding of or the ability to communicate in Anishinaabemowin is a definite asset
Terms
  • Very competitive remuneration and willingness to work as an independent contractor from a secure home office base
  • Must possess access to reliable transportation and be flexible to travel to -and work in- the effected communities. Periodic travel to other centers outside of Northwestern Ontario
