POSITION TITLE: Climate Monitoring Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Lands and Environment

CLASSIFICATION: MGO-07

SALARY RANGE: Starting at $78,030.00 Per Annum

POSITION TYPE: Full-time, Temporary (1-Year Term)

LOCATION: Saskatoon/Remote (Must be within Saskatchewan)

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Climate Change Program Manager

Brief Overview

The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) is seeking a qualified and knowledgeable individual to fill the position of Climate Monitoring Specialist. Under the direction of the Climate Change Program Manager, this position will be responsible for the implementation and expansion of the MN‒S’ Indigenous Community-Based Climate Monitoring (ICBCM) Program. The Specialist will conduct research and monitor climate/environmental indicators to measure the impacts of climate change on Métis communities across Saskatchewan. In this position you will facilitate the intentional transfer of traditional knowledge, apply science-based data collection methods, and engage community members and youth in ongoing program activities to raise awareness about environmental stewardship and conservation. Candidates must be comfortable with travelling by boat and working full days on the water and/or in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and execution of the ICBCM Program.
  • Lead research and collect data on water quality, air, soil and bota to understand the state of the environment and the effects of climate change.
  • Host community engagement sessions and workshops for education, outreach and capacity building purposes.
  • Work with Métis communities and citizens to encourage knowledge sharing and skill development opportunities.
  • Conduct traditional land use research through interviewing, data analysis and report generation.
  • Manage special projects and activities that will help interpret Métis history and climatic trends.
  • Ensure effective communication of climate monitoring results to the MN‒S, the province, federal government and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee meetings and working group sessions for various projects.
  • Engage with Locals and Regional Directors as well as the province and other regulators to advocate for Indigenous inclusion in environmental policy, programs, acts and regulations.
  • Work closely with other Ministry of Lands and Environment staff on shared priorities and initiatives.
  • Draft and/or deliver reports, briefings, speaking notes, and presentations.
  • Prepare and manage annual budgets and reporting activities.
  • Seek funding opportunities and support proposal drafting for programmatic needs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Climate Change Program Manager and/or Director of Environment.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Environmental monitoring field knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workloads, set priorities, meet deadlines and be agile to priority shifts.
  • Knowledge of Métis culture, governance and present-day challenges as it pertains to natural resources and the environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that take into consideration the comprehension level of the intended audience.
  • Advanced computer skills including knowledge of Adobe, Microsoft Suite, Google Earth, and GPS systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or certification in one of the following disciplines: Environmental Science, Climate Science, Natural Resource Management, Geoscience, Biology or another related field.
  • One to three years of relevant experience, preferably in environmental/climate monitoring programs that involve sampling and research.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this role will be considered.

  • Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation
