Climate Impact Scientist SX3

Term / full-time 2-year term with possibility of extension, subject to grant funding.

Location: Winnipeg, MB

Salary: SX3 $3,40 - $5,03 bi-weekly

Conditions of Employment:

Qualifications:

Essential:
  • PhD with significant relevant experience in a research environment, in fields such as atmospheric physics, oceanography, climatology, meteorology, physics, computer science, or other quantitative disciplines relevant to climate science, with particular attention to climate model downscaling and its applications.
  • Experience with climate modelling and downscaling.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead research initiatives, with strong time management skills.
  • Superior verbal communication skills, capable of presenting complex technical information to executive audiences.
  • Effective collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computational skills for complex climate modelling, including algorithms, high-performance computing, and statistical/mathematical methods.
  • Experience working with images, sensor readings, remote sensing data, and other relevant data types.
  • Experience in software development, documentation, and model deployment best practices.
Desired:
  • Experience downscaling climate models and developing risk projections for specific events.
  • Awareness of ethical, legal, and political considerations in applying machine learning and predictive modelling in government contexts.

Duties:

This Winnipeg-based position involves developing and implementing a climate model downscaling pipeline for climate risk quantification, focusing initially on extreme heat and human health. The role includes using the latest climate science to produce downscaled projections for Manitoba and enhancing the capacity of Data Science Program staff.

As a senior team member, you will establish the foundations of a climate risk quantification initiative impacting policy and operations across the public sector, ensuring high technical standards in the scientific basis of this work.
