Brief Overview
Under the general supervision of the MN-S Climate Change Program Manager, Métis Nation – Saskatchewan is seeking a strong team player to assist and lead the development of a Saskatchewan wide climate emergency preparedness and emergency response program through the MN-S Ministry of Lands and Environment team. This is a full-time position based in Saskatoon.
This position would be responsible for development of procedures and protocols for an Emergency Response and Emergency Preparedness program, aimed at providing support and a coordinated response to communities and citizens before, during, and after environmental/climate emergencies such wildfire and extreme weather. This position will be required to work closely with a variety of MN-S Ministries and staff as well as regional and community leaders to ensure the coordinated development and delivery of programming.
Key Responsibilities
- Development of strategic emergency preparedness and response plans, which would include reactive and proactive plans in response to community emergencies.
- Liaise with province, proponents, and other regulators on their response and preparedness programs and advocate for community supports.
- Work on the development Emergency Response and Preparedness Program including development of programming for future funding years.
- Coordinate the procurement and delivery of emergency packs/kits to MN-S Citizens as well as emergency equipment and supplies to communities (signage, training materials, etc.)
- Participate in and support the delivery of Emergency Preparedness and Response Training
- Develop and set strategic professional and departmental goals and objectives in coordination with the Environmental Team.
- Prepare reports which may include monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on program delivery.
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with Métis citizens, communities, and organizations.
- Ensuring emergency preparedness policies and procedures are culturally safe, respectful, and appropriate.
- Other duties/responsibilities as determined by the Director of Environment, Climate Change Program Manager, or Emergency Preparedness Committee
Qualifications
- Post Secondary Education and/or Training in a relevant field.
- 3-5 years experience in delivery of programming related to safety, emergency response, emergency management, etc. Volunteer experience in an emergency management role would also be considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of office procedures including budgetary and progress reporting, maintaining detailed records and document management
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience that relates to the duties and responsibilities of this role may be considered.
Knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of Métis culture
- Previous experience in program delivery to community
- Knowledge of models of Indigenous/Aboriginal governance, trends, Indigenous/Aboriginal
- funding programs, legislation and issues facing Métis or Indigenous peoples in Canada
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong computer skills (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Teams, and Outlook)
- Strong time-management skills along with the ability to prioritize many tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Must be able to work independently and confidently follow up on projects as required.
- Fully competent in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, Project)
- Valid Driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle is required.
Additional requirements:
- Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and access reliable transportation
- Must undergo a Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector
- Travel and working outside of normal business hours (including weekends) may be required 2-3x per month.
