Job description

The John Howard Society of Thunder Bay is seeking individuals looking to gain experience and/or supplement their current employment to join the Client Support Team as casual staff.

JHS provides 24/7 oversight and support within two residences offering transitional housing services to clients at risk or involved in the Criminal Justice System.

As part of the Client Support Team, staff are trained to support and provide coverage at both locations. Protocols and procedures are specific to each location and residency program.

Casual staff are not guaranteed regular weekly hours; shifts will be offered as needed to cover full-time and part-time staff. The shift schedule varies by location, with shifts of 4, 8, and 12 hours. Casual staff may also be requested to cover partial shifts and have the opportunity to participate in a weekly on-call rotation with minimal hours.

Opportunities for professional development through ongoing training are available. Casual staff are welcome to attend organization and team meetings with compensation.

Position Summary:

This role involves providing contractual services and support to residents of transitional housing during night, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. Responsibilities vary depending on the shift and site, including supervision and oversight of residences after hours, weekends, and holidays. The role may also include facilitating recreational activities for residents.

Position Duties & Tasks:

  1. Monitor access and oversee the residence(s).
  2. Record and report vital information as required.
  3. Assist residents in developing life skills for independent living, including role modeling, meal preparation, and chores guidance.
  4. Engage and support residents through recreational activities.
  5. Follow procedures and protocols to ensure safety and security.
  6. Complete tasks that support residence operations and legislative compliance.

Education & Experience:

  1. Post-secondary diploma or degree in humanities (e.g., Social Service Work, Child & Youth, Social Work, Addictions) or related fields (e.g., Criminology, Police Foundations).
  2. Experience working with vulnerable or marginalized populations (e.g., homelessness, mental health, addictions, youth, women, LGBTQ2STT, Indigenous, racialized).
  3. Experience in social services or security services is an asset.
  4. Experience in customer service is an asset.
  5. Effective communication skills and ability to contribute positively to the work environment.
  6. Ability to follow instructions, protocols, and procedures.
  7. Ability to work with diverse backgrounds.
  8. Completion of required training and professional development.
  9. Ability to pass enhanced security clearance.
