Position Summary

The Cleaner, Environmental Services, performs general housekeeping activities within established health and safety, infection control, and quality management guidelines. You should be able to work independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively with colleagues, staff, and residents, and provide excellent customer service. This role supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching, learning, research, and innovation. It also involves ensuring health and safety policies are followed to maintain a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients, and families.

Responsibilities include:

• Working safely in accordance with relevant regulations (OHSA, WHMIS, Biomedical Waste, etc.)
• Understanding chemical and equipment use, including vacuum cleaners, auto scrubbers, and carpet extractors
• Following written instructions and reading/writing in English
• Performing physical tasks such as walking, standing, reaching, kneeling, lifting up to 30 lbs., and pushing carts
• Cleaning floors, collecting waste, replenishing supplies, disinfecting beds, moving furniture, and heavy cleaning tasks
• Cleaning patient and clinical areas, including carpets and chairs, and setting up rooms

Qualifications

• Grade XII diploma or equivalent
• Health and Safety certification preferred
• Experience with microfiber cleaning systems
• Ability to read, write, and follow instructions in English
• Good communication skills
• Knowledge of cleaning equipment and chemicals
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Strong customer service skills
• Bilingual in French/English is an asset
