Job summary

Toronto Community Housing is seeking a Cleaner Apprentice who will assist with maintaining building cleanliness and ensuring a safe environment for tenants. This position is a part of a program aimed at providing TCHC tenants with valuable experience to foster future employment opportunities. The ideal candidate will be reliable, possess good communication skills, and have an understanding of health and safety practices.

Qualifications

• Experience in cleaning or janitorial work is an asset.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting and work outdoors.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act including WHMIS.

TCHC’s Cleaner Apprenticeship Program aims to create an opportunity for TCHC tenants 18 years old or older to gain experience that can lead to sustainable employment, financial stability, and ongoing professional development.

What You’ll Do

• Assist Operational staff with overall building cleanliness and provide a safe environment for tenants, staff, and the public
• Assist with cleaning exterior grounds and internal common areas
• Support cleaning of vacant units
• Respond to inquiries from tenants, staff, and the public courteously and according to policies
• Operate cleaning and communication equipment safely
• Work as part of a team and respond to emergencies as per policies and legislation
• Follow safety guidelines in accordance with the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act
• Use safety equipment and protective clothing as required
• Notify management of deficiencies or needs
• Attend meetings and training sessions
• May work evenings and weekends
• Perform related work as assigned

What You’ll Need

• Ability to operate janitorial and related equipment
• Experience in cleaning or janitorial work is an asset
• Follow instructions and learn new techniques
• Good command of English, oral and written
• Respectful service skills in a multicultural environment
