Job description

Volunteer Location : Various schools in the Northwest Territories, Canada

Please note that this is not a remote opportunity and requires physical presence in the Northwest Territories for the entire duration.

Placement duration : August 24, 2024 - June 25, 2025 (school year)

Language Requirements : English Level 5 - Fluent

Eligibility : Open to Canadian Citizens (including Permanent Residents and Open Work permit holders) and United Kingdom Citizens only

The Volunteer’s Role

Join us in making a positive and lasting difference in Indigenous communities! As a Classroom Assistant, you will inspire and motivate students, share your knowledge and experiences, and support their educational journey. Your role involves working in an e-learning program connecting classrooms across Northern Canada, participating in community events, and engaging with local cultures.

If you are passionate about teaching, eager to learn about Indigenous cultures, and self-motivated, this is the opportunity for you. Together, we can work towards a brighter future.

As a volunteer, you will :

  • Work as a tutor, especially in Math and Science, with experience preferred
  • Assist students during lessons under the supervision of teachers
  • Monitor student progress and communicate with teachers
  • Supervise students during activities and excursions
  • Participate in fundraising and community events
  • Contribute to other areas based on your skills and interests, such as computer instruction, art, music, or sports

Essential Requirements :

  • Hold a completed university degree or college diploma
  • Ability to pass a vulnerable sector police check
  • Currently residing in Canada

Essential Background :

  • Experience teaching or presenting to children and youth, especially with special needs
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in Canada; experience is an asset
  • Understanding of working with high school students
  • Awareness of different learning styles
  • Culturally sensitive and open to learning about cultures
  • Computer literate and tech-savvy
  • Previous volunteer or work experience, locally or internationally
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
