Job description

Volunteer Location : Various schools in the Northwest Territories, Canada

Please note that this is not a remote opportunity and requires physical presence in the Northwest Territories for the entire duration.

Placement duration : August 24, 2024 - June 25, 2025 (school year)

Language Requirements : English Level 5 - Fluent

Eligibility : Open to Canadian Citizens (including Permanent Residents and Open Work permit holders) and United Kingdom Citizens only

Your role as a Classroom Assistant will be invaluable in the classroom. You will have the opportunity to use your skills as an educator to inspire and motivate students in Indigenous communities. Sharing your knowledge and experiences, you will encourage students to learn, pursue higher education, and believe in their potential!

As a volunteer, you will participate in the e-learning program for students in grades 4-12, connecting classrooms across Northern Canada. You will collaborate with teachers, participate in classroom and extracurricular activities, and engage with the community to build meaningful connections and gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures.

As a volunteer, you will :

  • Work as a tutor, especially in Math and/or Science, with prior experience preferred
  • Assist students during lessons under the supervision of the headteacher
  • Monitor student progress and report to teachers
  • Supervise students during activities in gyms, labs, libraries, and on field trips
  • Participate in fundraising events at school and community levels
  • Contribute to other areas based on your skills and interests, such as computer instruction, art, music, or sports

Essential Requirements :

  • Hold a completed university degree or college diploma
  • Ability to pass a vulnerable sector police check
  • Reside in Canada

Essential Background :

  • Experience teaching or presenting to children and youth, especially those with special needs
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in Canada; experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset
  • Understanding of working with high school students
  • Knowledge of different learning styles
  • Cultural sensitivity and openness to learning about different cultures
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with technology
  • Previous volunteer or work experience in Canada or abroad
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
