We specialize in the sale and delivery of topsoil, garden mix, decorative rock, sand & gravel, fill clay, sod and other various landscaping products. During the winter months we conduct snow removal of commercial sites which utilizes various equipment and trucks to push/pile/haul out snow. As a seasonal and weather dependent company, we have a need to hire Casual Class 1 Drivers to fill in during busy periods on an on-call, as needed basis.

Position Overview

As the Class 1 Truck Driver, you will provide fleet operation services to all external customers. You will gain thorough knowledge of all Black Dirt Company products and an exceptional understanding of fleet operations.

This on-call casual position is in preparation for the Spring 2023 season. We are looking for Class 1 Drivers who are open to being called as needed to fill in during busy times. Work includes but is not limited to product retrieval, haul outs, and delivery within Alberta to residential customers and commercial contractors. Experience and willingness to operate any truck and/or trailer combination is beneficial (i.e., truck/pup, truck/end dump, tandem, single axle, etc.). There is the potential for this position to extend into an on-call year-round, permanent position (up to 6 days a week, on average 10-hour days, Monday to Saturday) if suitable for both parties.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Drive in a professional, courteous, and safe manner at all times
  • Check for safety concerns on location (assess hazards)
  • Perform route deliveries for customers or contractors
  • Perform snow haul outs to snow dump
  • Contact Truck Supervisor for supplies and parts
  • Maintain excellent driving habits
  • Ensure fleet/equipment maintenance is performed
  • Understand weight/volume and fleet capacities
  • Maintain positive customer relations
  • Ensure proper PPE compliance
  • Conduct Truck Driver Site Assessment at each site to identify hazards and controls at the first site of the day or Snow Removal Site Assessments at each site (winter)
  • Report Near Miss/Incidents; submit completed forms to Safety Manager
  • Work with Management to correctly handle incident investigations, when necessary
  • Maintain a clean and safe workplace (shop/wash bay and fleets) to minimize hazards; help correct or delegate any deficiencies
  • Report to Truck Supervisor and/or Management with driver noncompliance issues regarding company rules, policies and procedures

Qualifications

  • Ability to remain calm in handling multiple customer delivery requests
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to assess customer need promptly and execute accordingly
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle Dispatcher prioritized deliveries and multiple tasks at any given time
  • Self-motivated and enjoys a fast-paced work environment; ability to change job tasks within a day is necessary due to the nature of the business and weather
  • Great time management skills; available for seasonal long hours, a clear schedule to work all hours of the day, any day of the week and a strong work ethic. This position will require, although rare, potential holiday work
  • Weather dependent company
  • 3-Year Commercial Driver’s Abstract prior to hiring is a requirement
  • Must pass a pre-employment Drug & Alcohol test prior to hiring
  • Training In: Pits/Products, Driver’s Vehicle Inspection Training, Drivers Training, Road Test (conducted by an experienced driver or professional instructor), Weights/Fleet Capacity and Volume, Road Bans, Permit Process, Area/Route Awareness, Hotsy, Working Alone Policy, Hazard Reporting, Time Sheets, Job Sheets, WHMIS

Job Types: Casual, Seasonal

Salary: $28.00-$30.00 per hour
