Job description

MacKay Contracting Ltd. is a progressive and well established Heavy Civil Construction and Mining Services Company. We operate throughout Western Canada on a wide variety of projects. The Class 1 Driver is a vital position for MacKay Contracting Ltd. to ensure the safe transport of our clients’ product(s). You will work closely with the Loader Operator. Safety and communication are key elements of this role.

Location & Hours:

This position is based out of the Cranbrook, B.C. headquarters office, with job locations throughout the East Kootenays and Alberta. The shift schedule will vary depending on the job location and there may be occasion(s) where overtime may be required but is not expected to make up a major component of the role.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Prioritize the safety of self and others in all aspects of the job
  • Perform dump truck operations including loading and unloading materials and equipment safely as well as ensuring it is secured properly
  • Flexible to work extended hours, irregular days with irregular breaks
  • Responsible for constant cleanliness of work areas at all times
  • Responsible for daily cleanliness of vehicle, inside and out, with daily removal of all garbage
  • Accurate and full completion of daily pre and post-trip inspections of vehicles as well as a detailed logbook to NSC and company standards
  • Responsible for fueling of vehicle at end of each shift
  • Perform weekly greasing of vehicle
  • Complete driving assignments in a timely and safe manner
  • Perform required preventative maintenance, and bring to the attention of the Maintenance Manager any mechanical issues
  • Daily completion and submission of daily timecards
  • Daily completion and submission of FLHA reports/forms.
  • Return of vehicle keys/fob to shop board at end of each shift
  • Mandatory use of personal protection equipment
  • Additional duties as may be assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience in road construction involving asphalt, aggregate, and equipment hauling is an asset
  • Valid Class 1 driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract (within the last 30 days)
  • Be safety-conscious and extremely comfortable driving in all types of inclement weather
  • Able to promote a positive and safe work environment in a physically demanding and fast paced work environment
  • Comfortable working outdoors, in extreme weather conditions, and in a noisy environment with variable ground conditions (ie. dusty, muddy, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills: able to understand and effectively execute, give and follow oral, written and hand-signal instructions
  • Adheres to company Health, Safety and Environmental reporting and standard assessments
  • Position requires a high level of initiative, positive attitude, strong work ethic, and reliability
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic truck maintenance
  • Able to safely and efficiently perform all duties
  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug & alcohol test
  • Basic writing skills to accurately complete reports and other paperwork
  • Be in good health and physical condition to handle up to 23kg/50lbs and perform duties assigned
  • Valid safety tickets such as First Aid/CPR, TDG and H2S Alive are considered an asset
