Job description

The Claims function is focused on providing excellent customer service to our insureds. Working closely with the Underwriters and TPAs, the Claims team is an integral part of the product and customer experience delivered to our clients. Your role will be to manage claims across various product lines in a manner consistent with the Markel style and philosophy.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Claims Examiner to join our Claims Team.

What you'll be doing:

  • claims handling of higher value and/or complex claims on multi-line P&C business
  • prioritizing work volumes and working to deadlines to see claims through to final settlement
  • frequent and open communications with key brokers, TPAs and managing relationships
  • ensuring Markel's claims and reserving philosophy is effected and represented
  • regular communication with the Underwriting teams on key trends, feedback, recommendations for changes to wordings, data/input for renewal purposes, etc.
  • active involvement at renewal or key client meetings


Our must haves:

  • minimum of 3 years of relevant claims practitioner with preference given to candidates with first party Property claims handling experience
  • university degree
  • CIP or demonstrated progress towards completion
  • strong knowledge of insurance policy wordings and their application
  • efficiency working in Microsoft Office -- Word, Excel, Access, Outlook
  • excellent written and oral communication skills
  • demonstrated strategic and commercial approach to claims management
  • excellent technical expertise and negotiation skills
  • superior relationship management skills with colleagues and external partners
  • ability to work independently and as a contributing team member
  • ability to deliver results even when working to meet tight deadlines.
