Job summary

Thurber Engineering Ltd. is seeking a Construction Materials Field Technician in Calgary, Alberta. With three or more years of field experience, you will perform field testing and inspection on diverse projects across Canada, including out-of-town assignments.

Responsibilities include soil compaction testing, concrete testing to CCIL/CSA standards, and liaising with project engineers. A valid Class 5 license and ability to lift 25 kg are required.

Qualifications

  • Three years or more of field-based work experience in construction monitoring and materials testing.
  • Strong organizational skills and clear English communication.
  • CCIL/CSA Concrete Testing certificate is required (asset).
  • Valid driver license (Class 5) and ability to lift 25 kg.

Responsibilities

  • Provide construction inspection and field testing for infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct field compaction testing of soils and concrete testing per CCIL/CSA rules.
  • Perform pile construction monitoring for driven and cast-in-place piles.
  • Laboratory testing of field materials and reporting to clients.
  • Travel to local and remote construction sites as needed.

Civil Engineering - Construction Materials Field Technician (2026091888)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Construction Materials Field Technician, with three (3) or more years of direct experience, to join our team in Calgary, Alberta.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

This role supports larger complex industrial and infrastructure projects which are predominantly out of town in northern and central Alberta.

Responsibilities

  • Provide construction inspection and quality control/assurance testing for various infrastructure and transportation projects;
  • Conduct field compaction testing of soils;
  • Carry out construction inspection for various projects;
  • Carry out field concrete testing as per CCIL/CSA requirements;
  • Conduct pile construction monitoring for driven steel and cast-in-place concrete piles;
  • Laboratory testing of field materials;
  • Ensure all work conforms to CCIL, ASTM and other company and industry standards;
  • Effectively communicate results and observations to clients, contractors and project engineers verbally and in written formats;
  • Liaise with project engineers and client’s site representatives; and,
  • Travelling to local and remote construction sites.

Qualifications and Assets

  • Three (3) or moreyears of field-based work experience carrying out construction monitoring and field materials testing;
  • Completion of a related post-secondary diploma level program in Engineering Technology is an asset, but not required;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and English spoken and written communication skills;
  • Concrete Testing Certificate from CCIL/CSA is required;
  • Must be available to work variable shifts based on construction schedules which include weekends and extended work hours;
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver license; and,
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 kg at chest height to handle samples and equipment.

Additional Information

  • This position would appeal to those who thrive in a field-based environment and enjoy working out of town;
  • Many sites require pre-access and post incident drug and alcohol testing;
  • You will be required to provide a 3-year driver abstract and a 3-year insurance claims experience letter; and,
  • We will be required to obtain a Criminal Names Record Check for you as a requirement to operate Nuclear Densometers for compaction testing.
