Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Civil Engineer to join our Ottawa team and contribute to municipal and federal infrastructure projects. You will evaluate, design, and specify systems for water, drainage, roads, and related facilities, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to meet project goals.

You will assist senior engineers with fieldwork, calculations, documentation, and stakeholder communication, developing leadership and technical skills along the way.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, or eligible for licensure.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform civil engineering design including drawings and calculations.
  • Assist in preparing project documents and client communications.
  • Attend and assist in meetings with clients, contractors, stakeholders, and regulators.
  • Develop design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure design intent.
  • Assist in review of shop drawings and submittals, RFIs, and site observation reports.

Job description

The role of a Civil Engineer is to work as a team member as part of project teams of all sizes. You should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer systems or products for a project. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include design, calculations, field work, coordination of tasks, and technical writing.

You will apply your technical skills, project delivery, and developing leadership abilities to a complex array of multi-disciplinary planning, design and construction projects for a wide range of infrastructure for municipal, federal and other clients. Projects will typically involve watermains, sewers, force mains, culverts, municipal and site roads, sidewalks, parking lots, stormwater management facilities including Low Impact Development, grading and drainage. As you continue to develop specific experience and skills, you may specialize in one area or continue as a generalist.

The selected candidate will be confident, self-directed, capable of leading tasks, and will demonstrate a passion for involvement in the municipal engineering industry and an enthusiasm to help develop the practice.

In general, this role will assist more senior engineers/designers by performing the routine aspects of civil engineering assignments and may assist in the analysis of proposed projects.

Qualifications

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform civil engineering design which may include engineering drawings, hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations, grading design, condition assessment, engineering reports, design criteria, and prepare applications for regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
  • Attend and assist in client, contractor, stakeholder, and regulatory agency meetings to gain a better understanding of client's goals, project requirements, site assessments, key challenges, coordination.
  • Assist in the development of design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
  • Assist with the development of job specific discipline specifications.
  • Assist in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of civil systems and materials.
  • Participate in value engineering and cost estimating.
  • May conduct construction inspection services and may assist with construction contract administration duties.
  • Provide services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
  • Understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
  • Working knowledge of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions and developing jurisdictional experience and contacts.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as relevant discipline software programs.
  • Knowledge and skill with AutoCAD and Civil3D is considered an asset.
  • Take initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
  • Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work efficiently and effectively within a team.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, or eligible for licensure.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience

Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
